- i'd also like to join the group remarking about the last shot of the two people: it looks awkward and not up to the quality of the rest of the demo, but also too direct and obvious (in the spirit of "show, don't tell")

- 64k Windows dope on wax by Logicoma [web]
- This is a good intro, and definitely on par with the best in the compo, and the current state of 64k intros as well. Very commendable effort on the tech, tools and overall quality of the content.
But in my opinion, it's not really any better than that. At the same time the intro feels very satisfactory, but also a bit underachieving; it conflicts me. I was expecting to have our butts thoroughly kicked at the party but in the end I feel the competition was a lot more even, which—again—is not necessarily a bad thing.
I'm looking at things like the intro shot, where the effect is obviously very cool and generally well executed, but then I think about the background and how it's just a formless gradient and how the geometry doesn't blend into it at all. It's sufficient, but I feel like it shouldn't have been left at just that.
There's the Venus statue mesh. Very impressively compressed and generally looks great, absolutely love the modulation and "ornaments" generated on top of it, so good. Aside from that the scene looks barren and the lighting seems incomplete, by for an example having too much light in the background.
The mesh-particle head is absolutely fab, it just looks excellent and one of the best visuals at the entire party. The lighting plays so nicely with the details and I love how the dispersing bits add depth to the space. Even the depth of field plays super nice with them; not a trivial accomplishment. Everything feels properly energetic and floaty, the materials look like you can sense how they feel to the touch; I love it!
Up next the colorful polygon bits look really nice. However, as they are the only geometry inhabiting the scene, the scenes feel incomplete as a whole in a design sense. The final two parts don't do much for me apart from looking good, and towards the end my excitement starts to wane.
I guess I can sort of blame myself for intentionally exposing myself to how the sausage was made, that raised my expectations, probably by an unreasonable amount. Still I can't but feel the important aspects of the design work didn't get enough attention paid to them. I feel the cuts of the visuals don't follow the pace of the music, but just slowly tread behind. Maybe it's due to the fades inbetween the scenes? I feel like that slows things down too much. I miss the detail in the synchronization and editing apart from things tied to some of the bass and synth notes. It feels "tired", as in listening to the last track of a DJ set that was just a tad too long and you just have to dance through the last.
People were saying yx's (Polarity's) intro was just mimicking Logicoma's style and and niche, but honestly I think she had you guys beat this time around on the editing and camerawork front. Not that I wanna draw such comparisons anyway, you both clearly have your own styles and nobody owns any such stylistic conventions; not in the scene or otherwise.
All of this is absolutely not to imply that this was a lazy effort. A lot of work poured into here, especially the technical side; honestly the amount of effects is daunting. I just can't shake the feeling the result is less than the sum of its parts. Nevertheless, the thumb clearly goes up on this one.
(ps. and in any case, it's infinitely better than a certain hypothetical intro that supposedly would've won the compo) - rulezadded on the 2019-04-28 00:48:05

- it think it's good, especially the soft (fake?) global illumination, but also the depth discontinuity in the blur is a bit weird (and it's also not applied to the water)
the composition in 2d space is not super attractive but i think it works in putting the viewer "into" the scene, which is quite commendable for the category, props for aiming high - rulezadded on the 2019-04-26 23:02:56
