- demo Linux MS-Dos Windows Tribes by Pulse [web] & Melon [web]
- This is one of those demos I watched probably a hundred times back in the days, but I was today years old, when I found out it has a final version, that doesn't crash near the end. I downloaded it, and it ran to the end on my DOS machine. One thing off the bucket list.

and wtf freepascal, why :D
So the story goes, Pasy obviously writes everything in Pascal. Or with Delphi at work. With such nick, it's kinda mandatory. :) Their previous 4K attempt involved Pasy writing the visuals/effect code in Pascal, and then Aha rewriting it to C by hand so it can be compiled with MSVC, Crinked, and so on. Or so I've been told, I wasn't involved. But I'm a contributor to the Free Pascal Compiler project, so when I learnt that they're about to do this again, I was like "why would you rewrite Pascal to C by hand, it's possible to do a 4K just fine in FPC". Aha was a bit reluctant to believe, so I had to prove it. For him, and for myself. And not just that it's possible, but that one can build a workable toolchain around this, so Pasy can iterate faster while writing visuals. Aaaand long story short, here it is.
So basically I the two "tricky" parts are getting FPC code linked in a way, which won't involve the default runtime lib which is around 20-odd K at least, plus having Win32 API imports that are recognized by Crinkler, because the ones FPC uses by default aren't. If you have that as baseline, the rest is quite straightforward.
I know others have been doing size limited entries in FPC, so this is not breaking any really new grounds. It was more an internal prove-it-for-ourselves, and do some groundwork for future prods, rather than trying to break new grounds. But Aha ported 14400sec back to Pascal to test the new chain, and the backport is actually a few bytes smaller than the original C version. So, there you go. :) - isokadded on the 2021-10-10 23:24:11
