• About the timeout, we ran into the same problem on some machines (with slower NVidia cards) when Juippi did his GLSL music synth for Yog-Sothoth in 2013 (the gray screens at the beginning of the intro are the music).

• mu6k, from what you describe, it may very well be actually GL 1.0. All of those features should be available in that version.
  
  It actually makes me wonder if you (or someone else) could port this to some old SGI Irix box such as Octane2, in theory it could work, albeit (most probably) kind of slowly. But it'd still be incredibly bad-ass.
