- i'm really sorry, but this is really amateurish :) the tune, the ascii, the design, the fx, all of it. i'm not sure if people have subconsciously lowered their expectations these days, but it's sub-par even by nostalgia standards.

- ton: you're talking about sound design, not arrangement, and the obstacle was time, not space.
i don't want to come across like i'm immune to criticism, but i pretty much know the various things that are wrong with the tune, and i know the people (mostly musicians, to be honest) that are bothered by those things. it's just something you have to live with if you want to get stuff released in time. as long as it does its job, i'm fine with it. - isokadded on the 2011-08-30 12:48:21

you do have a point - the dilemma is similar to how the perception of tracker music has changed over the years. in the golden age of the amiga it used to be cool, because it sounded so "real" compared to the primitive bleeps of the atari st for example. you could use real instruments, and that was the shit. these days, in the time and age of mp3's and such, tracker modules are just something that *try* to sound like real music but don't, whereas the bleeps of the atari st are now characteristic and easily recognizable as oldschool, and in certain circles, oldschool now seems to be the shit.
when you hear a 64k synth that sounds like .. a synth, people are more inclined to like it, because as you implied they have other synth-sounding synths to compare it against, and because let's face it - it's what they expect from a synth that's programmed within size limitations. also for a certain group of people i'd imagine pure synth sounds cause a sense of familiarity as in "wow, this is just like back in the days on my c64 but a bit better and with reverb". the sheer power of nostalgia among people watching demos is not to be underrated, as razor 1911 have kindly pointed out :) nostalgia and clinging onto ages-old conceptions on what a demo should be like is what i've despised in new demos for a while now, and not only in music. but i digress.
punqtured:
in general we were under a very very tight schedule considering everything that had to be developed, learned, used and finished. all of the sounds (especially the bowed string instrument) could be tweaked into oblivion, but you need to draw the line somewhere when you've got an actual song to finish.
on that note, in general i'm more interested in making music than making sounds. it's quite easy to lose the big picture in a tune if you keep screwing around with details which, to be honest, are either unnoticeable by the regular joe, or are the kind of details that you know will never be perfect. that is to say, if you're modelling real instruments, you could spend countless hours trying to make it closer and closer to the real thing without ever reaching it, and you usually don't have countless hours to spend. the implementations here are a lot better than what we began with, and as i had to decide where to draw the line regarding tweaking the patches, i figured the end result would still do its job as a whole - and in the end the reception was a lot better than what i anticipated.
in that sense i usually don't dig into whether or not certain sounds of a released production could've been better. of course they always could be, but considering the available timeframe, the available tools, the available skills in using the tools, etc... what's done is done, see you in the next one :)
i'll let gopher comment on your comments regarding the signal chains if he wants to, but just a few remarks that are unrelated to the above:
- the snaredrum: it's not trying to be a "real" snare in any way, so e.g. the symphony orchestra analogy doesn't apply. it's one of the instruments that sounds pretty much exactly like i wanted it to sound.
- bassline / lead sound: as smash pointed out, this was intentional as well. flute or bells would've been too tasteless (could've thrown in a panflute for a comical effect though), and we never intended to go for a purely orchestral tune anyway. that's also why the snare is the way it is. the lead sound could've used some more character and variation though, but that falls into the "didn't have time, maybe next time" category.
regarding the distorted guitar - i really think it wouldn't have fit in. we went for a modern and stylish approach, and it's .. not it :) plus in the end it's really easy to build a tune around a guitar sound, and i didn't want to resort to that yet again. (a side note: they were just samples in the bp10 exe tune. nothing special there.) - isokadded on the 2011-08-10 22:36:56

- out of curiosity, which sounds do you feel are "oddly attached to the rest of the song" or have a "lack of quality", and in what way?
