- To change an address requires to "out" 4 bit values (2 to select the video chip register, 2 to set the low/high byte address)
The adress is restricted to the memory areas 0x0000-0x07fff, 0x4000-0x47fff, 0x8000-0x87fff, 0xc000-0xc7fff at off values. This is the maximum amount of video memory available when playing with video chip to be able to change the video address one time per line and displaying demo effects.
For the twister screen, i guess it is as following. But I may be completely wrong.
It is impossible to copy pixels for the moving character and there are not enough memory to store the animation.
To display the character is cpu intensive. The background is composed of vertical stripes of pens and the ink of each pen must be change every few lines. As you do that several time you mimick zoomed pixels. We name that magic raster and I guess it comes from atari demos.
This is wobbly because inks are changed at various pace and there are several variations of the striped background for different zoom levels. 2 outs per stripe (1 to select the pen, one to set the ink)
For the twister, I do not know. This is the part that makes the screen less easy to do, in my opinion. Maybe there are T twister steps and Z background zoom factor and thus T×Z versions in memory.
Maybe it is drawn in real-time by handling the edges (but there are some points that vote against that).
Maybe drawn completely.
Or a mix of that plus other things - isokadded on the 2024-12-29 10:02:00

Can you change the screen/display address mid scanline on CPC? To any address?
Not exactly. There are plenty of constraints (the CPU time it takes to address the video contraoller chip + constraints on the the available addresses for that purpose.
However, I'm pretty sure such kind of trick has been used to display the 284x372 logo and the following volume meter (see around 2min in the linked youtube video)
Then most effects changes the display address at most once per scanline, but I doubt there are save/restore buffer stuff. Let's wait the making off - isokadded on the 2024-12-25 08:06:28
