- Gargaj: I just skimmed over their article, so I might get some things wrong, but from what I can see, cubase64 uses vector quantization in order to compress the formant filters, and each one is stored as a waveform.
I also use some very crude form of vector quantization, yet it could be improved a lot. The main idea of my method is to compress the format filters themselves by storing a quantized version of the formant filter's log-magnitude spectrum in bark-frequency domain and then resynthesize it with random phases.
I think a fair comparison is not possible, especially because I need 10000000x the processing power for decompression and I have the aid of crinkler, but the raw numbers are that they need 13 kB for 255 different formants while I need about 0.7 kB for 186 different formants. And their algorithm scales better with longer music because they have real vector quantization.
Like I said, by stealing their vector quantization idea, I could probably chip off some more Bytes or make longer samples, but what the synth is really lacking right now is a decent sound :-) - isokadded on the 2012-09-04 20:03:19
