- Yeah the music is now in order... was a horrible mess earlier. 4klang apparently can break in very unpredictable and unexpected ways from unrelated problems (like underflow in this case).

- Final version
Soundtrack (flac)
This version should work on both AMD and NVIDIA configurations, and most of the recent drivers. Also various visual quality improvements such as the mercury's discontinuity reduction technique and post dither* to combat the banding a bit. Also includes the requested 21:9 (2560x1080) resolution version :) as well as some sort of a safe exe.
(*might not work on some drivers because I do bad things, but the safe exe version should have it always.) - isokadded on the 2017-10-04 23:40:16

- Excellent rendering, if a bit overdone in some aspects :)

- Phew, a bit of post mortem I guess...
Thanks so much for all the comments. The response is again way beyond what I expected :)
Some more or less obvious sources of influence and inspiration that I forgot from the nfo:
Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke, Philip Glass (obvious)
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Ralph Steiner
Ansel Adams
Lars Von Trier (also obvious but not explicitly used as a reference)
Dorothy Carter
The Dorothy Carter album "Waillee, Waillee" (1978) is the namesake of the intro. It was originally just an initial project name, but in the end I hadn't come up with anything else that I felt was more fitting, so I ended up leaving it at that. I kinda agree with ferris that there might've been a better name to be come up with, but what's done is done :). I first heard this album I think in late August and it's one of the most amazingly depressing pieces of music I've heard in a long time, or ever even, and I wanted to try to convey some of those feelings it gave to me in the form of this intro.
About demoscene influences, the main two that inspired me are Fermi Paradox and Horizon Machine.
The main motivation for this intro was to break through some conventions I thought I had too much of in my intros. The primary one was length. I don't like how me, or for that matter most 4ks in general always seem to hit the 1:30-3:00 range, so I sought to explore what kind of a 4k could be done if I pushed the minimum length to at least 4 minutes. Secondly I wanted to stay away from anything abstract as much as possible. In the very least I wanted not to have any reflective primitives or something to that effect. To quote Mick Gordon's GDC talk, "Change the process, change the outcome".
About Elevated comparisons. I of course thought of the connection while making this, but it was never used explicitly as a reference. I don't this is in the same league as Elevated, at least not in terms of impact and technical impressiveness.
About some of the criticism, I think it's fully warranted, but at the same time it's also mostly intentional. The pacing is directly inspired by Koyaanisqatsi, and it's intentionally a tad uneven just to drive the narrative better along with the music. All of the geometry is derived from the same cosine based heightmaps, which is why the water looks well... not exactly water. But that's not really important because I think of it more as a "special effect" in the first place, so the fact that everyone still refers to it was "water" or "liquid" means in my opinion that it did its job!
Other than that everything is pretty much just "painted". The lighting is entirely faked and all parameters are used completely liberally just to make it look as nice as possible disregarding any "physical correctness". The content payload is skewed towards the audio anyway (visuals are about 40% of the content and audio 60%), so there isn't much space to do any fancy tricks again.
Some responses...
neoman: Yup, "Lux Aeterna..." is one of my favorite demos ever. No explicit references were made but I probably can't not be influeced by it subconsciously while making something like this :)
zoom: I still want to see that regardless!
reptile: Well, yeah, it's not trivial :), though I didn't hear people complaining about that!
evilpaul: Haha, that's awesome! The fact that it had that effect makes me feel it worked successfully :). It's obviously slightly ferromagnetic with the approaching celestial body's magnetic field causing it to behave weirdly!
kb: Thank you, I think you nailed it.

I'm planning on putting out a a final version with bug, compatibility and visual quality fixes. All of that is pretty much done but I need to cram it into the allotted size again... those last half a dozen bytes can be a pain. Hopefully done in a couple days, possibly even today.
There we go, this little afterword is now larger than the intro itself. I hope I didn't forget anything. - isokadded on the 2017-10-04 16:07:43

- Neglected commenting on this. The concept is ambitious and this pulls it off, albeit just barely. The rendering quality along with some questionable artistic decisions (focal lengths, colors...) are the weakest links, no question, but of course you can only do so much with the allotted bytes. But like I said everything in the visual side is still sufficient. The music steals the show though, it's so goddamn clean, inventive and elaborate...

- Fucking insane. Quite possibly the best techno demo ever. That music is beyond words.
