- demo Windows DXM.JPG by Deus Ex Machina [web]
- Interesting and different but doesn't quite have what it takes to ascend into greatness. I don't like the music, the badly drawn cube and the effects don't seem to keep me interested enough to remain happy with the recycling.

- demo Windows deBut by deMarche
- Some nice code in it but colours are all over the place and design is notably absent. Demarche's got a lot better since this. I actually felt disgusted by one of the effects when I first saw it. That's a new feeling when watching a demo effect. :P

- demo Windows Virus by Starlight
- Nice music, a 2d pic, toruses, ball effect and lots of tunnel flyby. Not completely worthless but not really enough to turn the thumb to anything but down.

- demo Windows Ready by Poëm [web] & oror [web]
- The music almost drove me crazy in the beginning but it gets somewhat better later on. (heh, I wonder if we're talking about the same parts with Zone) The effects are nothing special but camera connects well with the soundtrack and it's all reasonably stylish in the end. I felt this was worth watching, using the camera like that in coordination with the sound would be interesting in a more serious production and this being as short as it is things do not get boring.

- demo Windows Evidence by deMarche
- Transitions connect the scenes well. I liked the group logo fading into a shine that was effectively used with the abstract object which subsequently becomes a blurry, color-changing background effect. The ball-flower-fireworks connection which thom mentioned was well done as well.
The greetings-part effect is best described as kind of like watching fireworks explode and the individual particles being like fireflies that continue on their path after the explosion. It was maybe the one that left me most impressed, but that is not to say it's the only good one. Seeing it for a second time there is surprising and still very interesting.
Soundtrack takes it's inspiration from classic demo material and is pretty nice although I feel it isn't the strongest part of this demo, it doesn't really add to the package but doesn't detract from it either.
DeMarche seems to be a primarily code-oriented group but still controls the design well enough, colours are used sensibly and the overall style is consistent, even personal. Whether you like the slightly minimalistic effect-at-a-time way of doing things is a matter of taste. This is combined with a pop demo type setup which won't probably win any point with the "fine arts" folks but can still be a beautiful experience when properly executed.
Finally some the negative things. The ending and mask scenes are fairly pointless and ugly and could've been managed without. Some scenes feel less than masterfully composed (the flower & soundtrack sync is one part I would object to) and I'm left with the impression that the demo represents coder design gone fairly well.
All in all a good effort and I gave a lot of thought on what the rating should be but in the end I feel I'm impressed enough to thumb it up.

- demo Windows Automatic Mind Control by Alpha Millenium Crew
- Smooth objects, coherent rust-metal-fire theme, pretty good music. A rather typical demo (and I mean that partly in a good way). Some effects are disappointingly simple though. Not the worst prod in the world, even somewhat enjoyable but I keep a rather strict line and still get plenty of prods to thumb up.

- demo Windows Faded by oror [web]
- Faded is a valuable contribution to the demoscene and worth watching & worth saving if you're not preserving only the absolute top of the crop. What sets it apart from the masses is that it is a melancholic demo that conveys a meaning.
The message seems to be somewhat unfocused here. Faded seems to talk about the meaninglessness of life, the limited time we have, criticize western society and about how people treat each other. That just seems like too much for a single demo to handle and we are left with just a very shallow commentary on many difficult issues. It doesn't help that the authors' english language skills are lacking and the viewer is sometimes left wondering what they were trying to say simply because of grammatical errors. I wish they would've sticked to french.
Graphically there are a couple of rather beautiful 3D scenes that have symbolic meaning explicitly spelled out in the loading screen (but the viewer can come up with alternate explanations for their symbolic meaning). The scenes follow the theme well and add to the textual element.
However, there's some lack of direction with the composition and apart from a couple of bright spots it isn't particularly enjoyable. The music sets the tone and works well for the demo but could be considered rather simple.
In conclusion Faded managed to make a lasting impression on me but falls into the better half of mediocrity with it's numerous problems. I recommend checking it out if you can't get enough of demos but it isn't among the great ones. - isokadded on the 2006-04-03 14:28:16
- demo MS-Dos Eyesight by Pulse [web]
- Scenepoetry: check, tunnels: check, abstract objects: check. All this and more here in a demo that's not really special in any way I'm sad to report. Found this to be from the worse end of the pulse prods we all don't know and love as opposed to the great, great ones.

- demo MS-Dos/gus Contact by Pulse [web]
- Graphically more interesting and better looking than for example Balance especially in the first half. Has some interesting and original objects, couple of good looking scenes but nothing special. Not one of the pulse greats...

- demo MS-Dos/gus Balance by Pulse [web]
- Really nice music but this is mostly a flyby demo and unfortunately not the prettiest one even in '96. Some nice pics by Lazur and the overall feel is pretty good. Not the best demo but I'd at least download the soundtrack. :)
