Somewhat recent demo with very stylish intro, then mediocre?

category: general [glöplog]

OK, this is probably going to sound like the ramblings of a madman (and it probably is) - but here goes:

I have gotten it into my mind that I sometime in the last year or two saw a demo. The very first intro sequence (don't recall if it presented the name of the demo or the group or something) was very well done and stylish. I think there were quite a few comments here on Pouet going like "wow, that beginning was awesome, but then the rest didn't live up to it".
I remember watching the demo and agreeing with that, the first scene was superbly well done, but the rest was not so good.

But I can't find that demo, and I'm now starting to suspect I might have dreamed the entire thing (which would mean I had a a dream that included Pouet comments...)

Platform?

Probably Windows (or other modern HW-accelerated platform like OSX or something) - nothing oldschool.

YES! That is it! Thank you, now I don't have to check myself into the insane asylum - it turned out it wasn't just my mind after all!

And here is the comment from Gloom that I remembered:

Quote:
The rendering and look is top notch - really, really good-looking (and runs smoothly on my PC). The intro is perhaps one of the coolest and best-looking intro-pieces I have seen in 10 years - it. is. stellar.

But that's really where the awesome ends, unfortunately. The rest feels just utterly random and dragged out to fill just barely two minutes, which makes the intro feel misplaced.

So I guess I can start trusting my memory again! :)

Wow, wild guess is wild! Like a Boss :)

Although, I never understood why the recent Cocoon demos are so slow even in good gfx cards.

Define good gfx card.

Define so slow.

I immediately thought this was about CNCD's Spacecut. It has a larger-than-life intro buildup, and then it ends.

I must be the only one who thinks Spacecut gets better after the intro.

@noby: No you're not. I love every part of spacecut. They are all different but tied together with style.

Well, it seems like I was a bit too harsh in my topic-description of "Nothing is safe", turns out that the rest of the demo was quite OK as well! :)

Agree with Optimus on the speed though, even with my brand-spanking new and fast GTX780 it is quite slow even at lower resolutions...

Oh, and to weigh in on the Spacebut debate, I also dig the dubstep-glitch parts as well!

What CPU though?

I first watched it in a friend, GTX675 but ok mobile edition. I7 there. It was really slow, almost slideshow.
So, then with my GTX660 I thought I shouldn't bother. I7 too. Was better here though, kinda slowlish but ok.
Then we watched demos from 5 years ago that had more pleasing visuals and were smooth and we wondered what's going on with the scene (scene is dead, etc :)

Use a machine from 5 years ago and you´lll get the same result and conclusions =P

Nothing compares to 5 faces which almost nobody could run but everybody thumbed up :)
I can understand Fairlight speed demos for what they display.
But that Cocoon demo had a sphere inside a cube tunnel, with some reflections, tons of unnecessary filters, maybe ssao and stuff. Too slow for not enough visuals.

Gargaj: CPU is i7 4770K @ 3.9GHz, so pretty close to top end.
I ran with FRAPS enabled, and "Nothing is safe" dropped down below 30fps at several locations, even when dropping resolution to 1280x800.
