dx8/9 demos

category: general [glöplog]
I got a new machine last week, and so i now have a decent dx9 class card instead of that shitty gf4mx. So, i need to catch up on all those pixelshader needing demos i missed. I guess others will be in the same position too at some time, so here's a few i've found:

flt/in space
bm/interceptor
ccn/coma on the dance floor
and/zoom3
dxm/kolme missifitti

What others have i missed?

Cheers for those

But i wish ps/vs demos were as compatable as the older stuff. Seems about 30% of demos won't run or run badly. Maybe its nvidia's quadro drivers? Or maybe just buggy demos?

It depends on API that coder uses. If he's chosen openGL then he must put more work to make it compatible too as many cards as possible

And for an example Interceptor by Black Maiden uses nVidia specific openGL extensions. So it won't run on ATI.

"Your Fingers So Gently On My Skin Trailer" indeeds asks for a lot of hardware, but it's such a bloody understatement that you wonder why you bothered in the first place.

I've seen non-PS jokedemos that looked more impressive.

(and there's nothing wrong with JA-RIG)

"Your Fingers So Gently On My Skin Trailer"

I agree with the above. It's very pretty, but it's not even worth the 20mb download for 30seconds of boring eye-candy.

DX9 demos i have but i never see because dx9 needed (and i boycott it because dx9 need dot-net and m$ dot-net spy-layer will kill my liberty) :

So, youre more into the closed platforms from MS then i assume?

DirectX 9 needs .NET?
Did I just miss something? :)

Besides, most demos he listed do not make any use of dx9 features, they even run on dx7 hardware.
added on the 2004-02-20 12:37:41 by tomaes tomaes
Tomaes : sorry, but they do not work on my DX8.1+winMe, and ask for D3D9.DLL
perhaps i mistake and D3D9.DLL is not a part of DX9, but why these demos need this library ?
Zone: maybe you should re-read what he wrote.

It runs on dx7 *hardware* as it doesnt use any *dx9 feutures* , in wich is general lamer mouth means 2.0 shaders or anything else *new* feutures in dx9 compared to dx8.

D3D has always had backward compability to older drivers aswell, i think we have backward compability to 5 now or so.

And again, your rant about .NET is as lame as your red keyboard avatar.

Oh dear, oh dear...
Zone:
First of all you don't need .net to use DX9.
Soon You won't be needing Visual C++, coz I think that DevC++ will be able to handle DX9 as well.
Next You You will be able to instal DX1234.. on your ie. Matrox G400. But all the features that aren't supported by G400 will be simply software emulated (brrr). And that's why it's easier for programmer to use DX than OpenGL (which offers many vendor specific features).
On the other hand the best new "thing" in DX9 are floating point pixel format textures. But I don't remember any demo that uses it. It's for now only supported by ATI (on nVidia cards It's cloaked).
The technology is superb and It opens completely new paths of making effects.
Google for HDR lighting or Paul Debevec.

Cheers.

Btw Take a look at CandyTron's glow - It's very simple and cheap when using ps2.0 but this Intro actually does it without this technology.

bonzaj : thank you for your explanations, i'll try to install dx9 if i can do it without .net layer

Demomaking is about doing impossible things on cheap hardware, and i prefer visual cheats than pure (driver) code
I remember a coder who said bitmap mapping was impossible with the planar video mode of the Amiga, and good coders DEMOnstrate he was wrong.
bonzaj: i think that's the DX9 feature which makes the last Cocoon demo Coma ATi-only (not sure i'm not a coder :] ...)
