Hi trolls (nytrik, ferris et al.), no face-palming required.

Quote:

Well that "bit more" is really a tiny bit. They just ask your name, if you're attending the party, and if you'll code a demo for one of their toys. Which for most people goes like "X no yes".

Nope dude. If you consider going there as a speaker - you maybe would like to know whom you share information with - and as a speaker you might give them a bit more information in the free text fields and that information might not be intended for the general public for very good reasons.

Does it matter which individuals are doing it?

Yes it does, direct contact helps. plus what GbND said.

People go to Solskogen and Edison and Revision and Assembly and Evoke etc. etc. every year without giving much thought to who is actually running around and doing the work

Well, I don't belong to these people.

I care very much about who is doing a certain party, especially if I know they are doing a totally awesome job every year. I guess I'm not the only one here thinking like that.

e.g. If there would be a new party here - and I would know that a certain group of persons is in the organisation (You know who you are.) - it is almost guarantied that this event is going to be totally awesome.
Of course that does not mean that a certain party/event is meant to fail if somebody else does it - but given the amount of free time I have available that makes the decision where to go easier (well now, that's pretty conservative, isn't it? getting old...).

And well, you have to give some Europeans pretty damn good reasons to go through the hassle of getting there. I really hope NVScene is going to be awesome (especially as a NV hardware poweruser for years), but I think you could care a little more and reconsider your assumptions.

Um, the field says "If you'd speak, what would you speak about?", that's a pretty straightforward question; if you end up speaking, this is more or less the information that will be on the seminar schedule, etc.

What kind of information would you enter there that is so sensitive?

Of course I will tell you right here on pouet. ;)

Shameless thread hijacking:

TDF takes place on 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Given the extreme time zones, you would actually have the time to attend TDF, flight to SF and attend NVScene on 24th without missing a bit.

Who's accepting the round the world demoparty trip challenge?

Zavie: that doesn't count as thread hijacking - that counts as thread _awesome_ :)

Damn, I can't find my pot of gold to pay for all the tickets :(

Zavie: that's exactly my plan!
However, I'm still unsure whether I'll be able to pull it off because Japan and US are not exactly easy-to-get-a-visa-to countries.

Just because something is supported by a company suddenly makes it untrustworthy?

In the 'states, yes. I know things are different in Europe: I've tried, in vain, to impress this point upon Gargaj in the past. This is a cultural difference that you would do well to try to comprehend, rather than bounce back into slinging insults.

Parties are helped and sponsored and organized by companies all the time.

You're really seriously clueless about north America, aren't you? Look at the many existing and past parties here. The only ones that worked and continue to work are the ones that are run by and funded by people and non-profits. Of all the parties I've been to, only one failed to pay out it's prizes at the end... you might remember, you were at that one.

Quote:
Also, Scene.org is a non-profit organization, and not a "business entity", so all of your logic is flawed in both directions there, sonny.

Now you're just being disingenuous and insulting. It's not scene.org that bothers people, it's NVIDIA. You know that.

Relax.
Come on .... We all accept corporate sponsor for what they are. Ok they are prettry ignorant about what demoscene is truly about.I guess they always will.
On the other hand they provide the cash. That' s exactly what we are expecting from them. Us parties are not european parties... Big deal ! As a european expat scener in texas i will experience us party for the first time with nvscene. I greatfull to gloom and nvidia for that....

I'd really like to know what the difference is between european and american demoparties with regards to sponsorships. I am in many ways a fan of american culture, so this interests me greatly... anyone care to elaborate?

I do understand the cultural differences, more than you give me credit for, I would say, so let's just put that slung insult aside as well and get to the core here: if everything supported by a corporate entity is untrustworthy then your society as a whole would collapse. Since it hasn't, let's assume that this is an exaggeration on your part, perhaps specifically linked to the area of "demoparties".

I don't really know how to verify that fact, but I'll take your word for it. Now: given that there are one, two or three active parties, organized on a regular basis, there's not really a whole lot of math to justify using sponsorship or non-sponsorship as a metric for trustworthyness. But even if that was 100% true, a non-profit is at the helm on this one too. With people who know very well how to throw excellent demoparties.

I heard that a few people had a problem with that -- and that should of course not have happened. AFAIK this is the only beef a select few people seem to have had with the event itself. I hope therefore that the fact that Scene.org will be handling the prizes directly this time around should offer some sort of confidence that we're looking at things that didn't go perfect 6 years ago and try to improve where we can.

Sorry, but no. It's you who insist on focusing on NVIDIA as the sponsor and supporter of the event, despite the fact that I've made it very clear that Scene.org is the primus motor behind this event. I don't mind a difference in opinion, but those opinions do indeed need to be based on fact and not bias or fiction.

Also, just to make this perfectly clear: you make it seem as if the party failed to pay out its prizes: it didn't. All of the hardware and software, with the exception of yours and another person's, was, to the best of my knowledge, handed out on-site. The cash portion of the prizes were indeed delayed, but paid out within a month after the event ended. Again: one or two exceptions, which were (again: to the best of my knowledge) tied to errors in communication or data needed for the payouts.

If it is indeed the case that you or your group-mates _have not_ been paid the cash part of your prize from 6 years ago -- at all -- then let me be the first to apologize and ask that you contact me privately and I make sure it's taken care of immediately.

If anyone appears disingenuous and insulting here it's you.

You could have your own reasons for distrusting NVIDIA (a multinational company that many of us have good contact with on a personal level and who's put up funds for numerous other demoparties in the past besides their own, but hey - maybe you have insider knowledge about them secretly using demos to promote the sale of arms or something) but you could at least have tried to balance that out with the knowledge that scene.org is also playing a big part in the event.

If you feel that badly about it you could always just stop taking any interest in it and not show up.

The only ones that worked and continue to work are the ones that are run by and funded by people and non-profits. Some of them have corporate sponsors or cooperate with corporate entities, some vehemently refuse sponsorship monies and therefore feel rather strongly about uninformed individuals who claim otherwise based on no factual research whatsoever, such as you. In any case, it is complete and utter nonsense to assume that Europeans would better trust corporations to organise demoparties than Americans do, this is a rather insulting misconstruction for which you would be best advised to apologize.

Amazing. There is another demoparty announced and some people mangage to bitch about it. If this wasn't pouet I might but shoccked. I don't mind if it's your grandma who organises a party, or Future Crew resurrected for all I care. Gee relaxed people. Just visit it, or don't. Make a demo about it or don't.

I would love to fly all the way up there. Chances are I won't be able to afford it, so I'll do my best to ship a demo instead. What's your excuse?
