Facebook: Censorship and Despotism

category: residue [glöplog]
On Tuesday (the day before yesterday), I posted in a group at Facebook that I think a certain female politician looks very beautiful. The original posting: "[Proper name] ist wirklich hübsch! Gratulation!" (This is German; in English it would translate as: "[Proper name] is really beautiful! Congratulations!")

What's wrong with that? IMHO nothing, or do you have any objections to that?

When I tried to log into Facebook the next day, Facebook prompted that I was banned for 12 hours because of this posting! Facebook stated that this posting was violating the "standards of the Facebook community".

Here are the official standards of the Facebook community:

Quote:
* Violence and Threats
Safety is Facebook's top priority. We remove content and may escalate to law enforcement when we perceive a genuine risk of physical harm, or a direct threat to public safety. You may not credibly threaten others, or organize acts of real-world violence. Organizations with a record of terrorist or violent criminal activity are not allowed to maintain a presence on our site. We also prohibit promoting, planning or celebrating any of your actions if they have, or could, result in financial harm to others, including theft and vandalism.
* Self-harm
Facebook takes threats of self-harm very seriously. We remove any promotion or encouragement of self-mutilation, eating disorders or hard drug abuse. We also work with suicide prevention agencies around the world to provide assistance for people in distress.
* Bullying and harassment
Facebook does not tolerate bullying or harassment. We allow users to speak freely on matters and people of public interest, but take action on all reports of abusive behavior directed at private individuals. Repeatedly targeting other users with unwanted friend requests or messages is a form of harassment.
* Hate speech
Facebook does not permit hate speech, but distinguishes between serious and humorous speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.
* Graphic Content
People use Facebook to share events through photos and videos. We understand that graphic imagery is a regular component of current events, but must balance the needs of a diverse community. Sharing any graphic content for sadistic pleasure is prohibited.
* Nudity and Pornography
Facebook has a strict policy against the sharing of pornographic content and any explicitly sexual content where a minor is involved. We also impose limitations on the display of nudity. We aspire to respect people’s right to share content of personal importance, whether those are photos of a sculpture like Michelangelo's David or family photos of a child breastfeeding.
* Identity and privacy
On Facebook people connect using their real names and identities. We ask that you refrain from publishing the personal information of others without their consent. Claiming to be another person, creating a false presence for an organization, or creating multiple accounts undermines community and violates Facebook¹s terms.
* Intellectual property
Before sharing content on Facebook, please be sure you have the right to do so. We ask that you respect copyrights, trademarks, and other legal rights.
* Phishing and Spam
We take the safety of our members seriously and work to prevent attempts to compromise their privacy or security. We also ask that you respect our members by not contacting them for commercial purposes without their consent.
* Security
We take the safety of our members seriously and work to prevent attempts to compromise their privacy or security, including those that use fraud or deception. Additionally, we ask that you respect our members by not contacting them for commercial purposes without their consent.

So, which of these standards was violated by that harmless posting? IMHO, none! So banning me from Facebook for 12 hours was entirely an act of despotism!

This makes me seriously wonder whether I should stay at Facebook. Probably I will leave Facebook. Censorship and despotism must not be tolerated!

What do you think about that?

Not going to comment on the issue itself, but is it really connected to the demoscene? Does it really need a thread on Pouet?

Well, it depends on the context a bit. Your comment can be construed to mean that you reduce a female politician to her mere looks. Some people might be offended with this.

It's not from facebook. A couple of users reported your posting - for whatever reasons. Blocking persons or pages is only a matter of organisating a group of people to block/report a certain user/post/page.

Since you have a FB-friendship with Adok, did you see the actual post?
added on the 2013-08-15 12:01:25 by w00t! w00t!
Nope. Keep your friends close w00t and your enemies even closer. ;]
Beyond that I'd have to go on FB more than once every few days anyway.

WsW: I posted that to a GROUP. Even if ringo is a friend of mine on FB (AFAIK he is only a subscriber), he only sees what I post to my own wall, not what I post to a group.

Yes! We are the enlightened ones. It is our duty to serve society in an optimal way. In this case, we should use our programming skill to create a NEW SOCIAL NETWORK as a competition to Facebook in order to prevent that Facebook becomes a monopoly, that too many people rely on Facebook and that Facebook can manipulate the world by unfair means.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aufkl%C3%A4rung

Quote:
Eine knappe und umfassende historische Perspektive bietet folgende Definition:
„Enlightenment was a desire for human affairs to be guided by rationality rather than by faith, superstition, or revelation; a belief in the power of human reason to change society and liberate the individual from the restraints of custom or arbitrary authority; all backed up by a world view increasingly validated by science rather than by religion or tradition.“
– Dorinda Outram: The Enlightenment (1995)[2]

We are the enlightened ones because we know how computers work and how to program them.

i know some 6-year-olds who can...
...anyway i´m outta here.
I do understand Facebook-policy now.

Adok, you scare me. And never, ever, speak about me as in "we". We is not "us". You is not one of "mine". I am not one of "them".

Never, ever, generalize people.

My famlily was in Austria. Once. Now I am 2nd generation.

Every man is unique. There is no "we".

Congratulations! You've managed to scare off yet another user, Adok! Keep being "enlightened", you're definitely achieving exactly what you intend to, right?

Adok - you left here in a big huff a few weeks ago. Vowing never to return. Remember?

Probably would've been a good idea if you had left it that way.
