ps: If you are so hell-bent on making a new pouet, why not start coding NOW instead of constantly complaining about the status-quo and have a basic prototype in a week or two. :)

I fully support open sourcing the pouet code, so that someone can start a brand new rewriting-project with much fanfare, then get bored since it apparently does not resonate with his idea of "just a quick rewrite", and go back to his cave. I propose we keep pouet 1.0 running as the rewrite-fanfare-bored-cave-going cycle completes.

@nic0: Well, this is still v0.9.903... ;)

The changelog hasn't been updated in 2 years. So, probably more like v1.1, inofficially. :)

tomaes: i prefer avoiding encores of spaghetti codebase only i upkeep. its part of my new found religion.

nic0: the rewrite fanfare has been fanfaring for years now, when will it be completing the cycle? why wont it allow others to speed up the process?

i'm all for dumping this codebase and start fresh, but that plan has been "in the works" in the shadows for years. i'm advocating bringing it to public asap to allow the rest of us to support it.

Call it Pouet 2.0 or whatever - I'm all up for it.

I'd call it pounds-off.me!
This thread is a mere deja vu from other threads we already had about the whole "let's improve Pouet" conversations.

Things I want to add, demozoo[0] does not want to be a Pouet replacement, not does it want to be one. It's a more indepth prodlisting site - which is fine for me.

Let's NOT replace Pouet with yet another site, or forum or whatever. Instead let's improve on what we (might?) get from the new Pouet 2.0 source code, as only a couple of us have seen it - it doesn't make much sense to discuss whether it's clean or not. Whatever it looks like, people will either complain it's too dirty for them to take part, or they come up with a rewrite in some obscure language.

As psenough already said - getting the Pouet 2.0 source into something like github, bitbucket (or whatever) is the first step to let us help - maybe some dev environment later (the least of the problems). If any open source code hoster isn't an option either, it shouldn't be a problem to set up some supersecret SVN anywhere else either.

Last thing, let's keep the overall visual style as is please - I love seeing trumpets.

tl;dr - Dear Gargaj source please?

There's a reason this site has not changed much for the past decade: It didn't need to. It was and is good enough for what it is. A couple of hundred regular users with a niche hobby/sub-culture don't really need 10 levels deep nested comment threads and gradients and widgets and API integration with social networks X and Y. In a way I like how pragmatic and to-the-bones this site still looks and feels.

Bug fixes, a video field in the submit form and better admin/helper dudes tools would be appreciated (bonus points for a manageable credits system), but overall I'm somewhat content and I guess I'm not alone in this. If something better pops up eventually, fine, I'm willing to help also, but I'm not holding my breath just yet. :)

tomaes: it if would be "good enough as it is", why are there 3-4 threads a year discussing how pouet needs to change?

Saga: well, the sceneid login is already there. Might as well add prods and a bbs ;)

d.fox: People like to bitch and It's mostly the same 5 or so people every time. The other 18k accounts keep comparatively quite. ;)

tomaes: maybe they keep quiet because pouet sucks for them :)

Pissed off people usually make themselves heard, they don't keep quite. Unless they're the passive agressive type. ;)

And we're back to square one, or were any of these discussions seem to lead. People are stuck with their opinions, not moving a bit.

All in all, it just shows that this community is not so different, from any other, after all - which is also neat to know. We're nerds, we don't seem to be able to actually produce something out of a discussion if it concerns our own needs. Reminds me on the PirateParty in .de, somehow..

Not so fast! Hold on to your seats, folks, I'm going back on topic.

Speaking personally (and not on behalf of the rest of the Demozoo team), I haven't made up my mind about what sort of role Demozoo is going to have as a 'community hub'... partly because completing the prod database is the priority, and partly because there's no way to engineer or predict what a community is going to do anyhow. Just because there aren't any community features *now* doesn't mean it'll stay that way: most likely, there will be a discussion forum, for "fix me beautiful" purposes if nothing else.

Beyond that, I'm not going to rule out any options. I'm entirely open to the possibility of becoming a Pouet replacement, or *the* Pouet replacement, IF everybody concerned decides that's in the best interests of the scene. Exactly what that means would be an open question - whether it's sharing data between Demozoo and Pouet to the point where the sites are effectively equivalent, or even creating a custom view of Demozoo with the music and graphics entries filtered out, giving it a blue background with trumpets and calling it Pouet. (This is not as silly as it sounds: once Demozoo is live, I'm planning to do something very similar with zxdemo.org - relaunching it as a skinned/filtered view of the Demozoo db.)

What I definitely don't want is for Demozoo to be a Pouet *competitor*, because fragmenting the community would suck.

Actually I like Pouet as it is. Though an oversight that I can think of is the fact there isn't a newbie/newcomer section. I can imagine it would be easy enough to implement, anything that the button, or whatever links to, is just helpful threads in the BBS.
Yeah, just add some cats here and there and pouet is fresh & ready for 2020!
