ASSEMBLY Summer 2012

category: parties [glöplog]
the access to the prerecorded productions might be available at asm, but the recordings are probably raw, and taking up huge amount of space. It might not be trivial to have them available at the compo-studio right after the compo.
I know it is _possible_, but as a main/compo organizer I also know that a lot of stuff is going on during the time of the compos.
At least if this would be possible anywhere, it probably would be at ASM, since they record all their entries as far as I know.

Depends on the hardware you have. There's equipment that records everything on the fly and allows you to do instant replays and route them to another output. If they got this it's just a matter of a few button presses to get anything that ran in the compo on the studio screen.

Incidentally that's exactly the stuff we have at Revision (Newtek Tricaster). Hmmm :)

reed : "one computer for the studio and access to the pre-recorded productions "

and selecting the 10 second snippet that you want and hooking it up to the tv mixing system and the audio system and have people staring at a tiny laptop screen on the table instead of at eachother.

that last one makes very lousy tv ;)

kb : no, its all raw for as far as I know. so no nice mp4/whatever encodig.

franky: you didn't get it - they're recording the main AsmTV feed anyway. There's stuff out there that supports instant replays of the past of a running recording, eg. in this case the compo that just ran.

Or, to clarify - Think a sports broadcast where they show the last goal over and over. Same stuff can be used for reshowing the demos that ran a few minutes ago. :)

Selecting the 10s snippet would be like "skip trough this thing with your mouse".. Maybe..

or jsut skip to the beginning to the demo, cue in, let it run while people are duscussing. It's not too hard.

kb_: great - now you know what to implement for next years revision compo shows ;)

We should probably solve the "we need some orga who's at least remotely sober enough to pull this off" problem first :D

kb: take that sports broadcast theme further and let them pause and draw circles and arrows on top of the screen.. "the cube span off the shot here, but it should have been moving smoothly towards the other cubes here. sloppy"

slowmotion could also determine if the balls are touching in various productions.

Is there anywhere I can watch the compo studio online?

as said earlier, it may take a while until the videos are online.
as studio footage will need to be edited / tweaked and then rendered *and* because all team members are still sleeping, this may take some time.

"there are clipping polygons here here and here"
It had a Zeppelin! Don't you remember the Zeppelin? No? What about the Teddy? No? Well look at the screen then, it's right there!

are you sure it would be circles and arrows they'd be drawing though

Anything else? GO! :-)

isnt the bullshit part of the charm? ;)
From what saw, the video editing device this year was a small box that used thunderbolt in to a iMac.
That thing supposedly does 720p60 recording/decoding on macbook air as well, could work if someone brought that and played those live (It's not like slides have to be prepared at that point or anything)

Nobody has suggested screenshots yet though, easy to do and potentially the submitter can also cook up those if he wants to. :)

But yeah, puryx is right, video is possible but not very convenient and easy. I can try suggesting this as it would be pretty useful and neat in my opinion as well.

Sports screen? Oh dear... I can already imagine the penis drawings. :)
But pointing out things in a demo sounds like a good idea, I wonder how that could be implemented.

In terms of the demos at least -- weren't they all pre-captured for the bigscreen anyway? Someone said so, but I sat too far away to actually notice, and didn't really check it afterwards.

Thank you all for your great comments and enthusiasm! This was the 7th year I've been producing the ASM compo studios and the first time I've had so much feedback about it. I really appreciate it. To be able to connect with one's audience like this does feel good.

The last couple of years in graphics compo studios we've had the entry slides for the guests to watch during the studio. It makes such a difference when each entry can be analyzed in detail while the guests are watching it AND it's shown in the broadcast for the audience at the same time. With demos and videos it's naturally a bit more tricky from a technological point of view and schedulewise. Not impossible though. Screenshots would be the next best thing - actually we kinda had those this year in the demo compo studio, there was a screen that listed all the entries there with thumbnail pics.

Anyway, I will be making notes of your comments. We'll see what we can come up with next year!

smash: The sports broadcast pause+drawing is the best improvement idea I've ever heard! :D
