Alternative to all-time top
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Check out this search, it is so much more relevant (for me anyway).
Maybe prods popularity needs to scale according to its age...

Good point. There has not been a new entry in the current all time top for years now..
I am for it!

what part of 'all-time' dont you get exactly?
there is no 256b in the list. so it sucks :D and +1 for Maali.
Maali,
think about it for a moment, right now a new comer (such as myself), would think that the best demo ever made is debris. Now don't get me wrong I think debris is definitely the best demo of its time. I also think that unreal was the best demo of its time and it's not in the all-time top list.
I think that by nature of the scene, that things keep involving, you would always have newer and more impressive demos and I think that "all-time top" list doesn't reflect that...
I also never said that the alternative should be named "all-time top"...

Some of the demos in this list got into the all-time top within a week or so (or maybe a month). Probably the demos in the last few years were simply not good enough! :)

I think found a way to explain myself: people vote for demos that have made a technology breakthrough. In reality, most of the "all-time top" prods are exactly that, a breakthrough. I'm basically saying that a breakthrough in technology is great thing, but the breakthrough greatness fades away while the position in the list remains.
All I'm saying that this list doesn't reflect how agile demoscene is.

wouldn't expect any list to do that. if it's a new prod we vote on a kneejerk reaction, if it's old we vote on nostalgia.

Well, I think "puls" by rrola is way better than "tube", but still it isn't in the all-time top. I am among the ones that think the algorithm can be perfected.
i been bothering gargaj to opensource pouet.net and let people discuss these things and suggest proper alternatives or engineer a parallel solution. but it seems to take months for him to do an upload to github and nominate a few trusted sceners to maintain it. he's waiting for all potential hackers who might take advantage of some parts of the code being made public to clear the internet first or something.
An interesting way to look at it is "popularity-over-time", for example:
a prod with +110 positive votes that was release 20 days ago, would have a 5.5 popularity/time index. such a prod will be higher ranked than +500 positive voted prod that was made a year ago (500/365=1.3).
This can even be improved by doing "popularity/time^factor" where the factor can be perfected to get a nice "blend in the masses" curve.
This concept somehow mixes between the top of the month and the all time top... but I think it might be interesting.

psenough: or perhaps he feels that Pouet should stay Pouet and that anyone who wants to make their own site with their own popularity algorithms are free to do so.
It's funny because I feel that the alltimetop disadvantage old prods (80-90's) (because pouet didn't exist / wasn't popular?). Second Reality is not on the all time top, wtf.
Also, pouet has a cool "hidden" feature which allows to make yearly tops

people only started using pouet en masse in 2001/2002. and most of the productions werent even in the database. lots are still missing (free glops!). its normal that people pay more attention to whats being released now then what was released back in the days.
i agree with gloom.
but pouet sucks anyway.
if one want to build a new all-time top feature, why not do so for different categories as well? like if one want to see what c64-musicdisk is the top favorite amongst the majority, for example.
in todays web-designed world there should be dynamical content generative features for the user to choose what kind of statistics he wants to see anyway.

TLM: That list explains why my interest in the scene is fading :) (yes. your list. not the all time high). The past few years it has been in a sad state when it comes to prods. (and before anyone screams "make it better yourself": No. I am not capable of doing that.
While we're at it, why don't we choose the best song and painting ever? It's like, totally objective and stuff if we base it on a vote!
First of all, I don't think pouet.net will be the first site a person not aware of the demoscene before will visit in his/her search for scene stuff. This is not a newbie-friendly website. Just imagine you were a newbie and you bumped into pouet.net the first time in your life. You wouldn't really understand all too soon what this site is all about. There is no "Introduction to the Demoscene" here, the site actually doesn't even mention that it is about the demoscene! And in the FAQ, there is no question like "What is this site all about?". In short, pouet.net is for insiders.
The more relevant website for newbies is scene.org. And this site has a good introduction to the scene as well as viewing tips sorted by year of release. So it has all you wanted, TLM. I think it's good and pouet.net need not be changed, unless you want it to be a site not only for insiders.

Too bad you can't do something about it, oh wait!..
