The Assembly prizelist hasn't been announced yet, and when it is, I expect it to be pretty much on the same level as it has been for years.

That's my assumption too. And a four figures price is what I was referring to as "significant". I wasn't comparing Assembly to its previous editions, as your comment seem to imply, I was comparing Assembly to other parties.

Zavie: but comparing Assembly to other parties makes little sense unless they actually made radical changes to their prize-list, which they (most likely) will not do. Therefore it is more sensible to compare them to themselves, in which case there has been no real "push" to "lure releases to the party".

The same can be said for The Gathering -- with those prizes, and looking at this years releases, I think it's fairly obvious that people go for release parties they attend over a potential nice 1st cash prize.

vic-20 was disallowed from the oldschool compos so that britelite wouldn't have to worry about losing for pwp again.

i really can't see how narrowing the allowed platforms would bring more entries to the oldschool compo. people who complain that they don't want to make a demo for the compo becoz vic-20 or whatever is also allowed there, are the kind of lamers that will not be bringing any production to the compo in any case, coz there is always some lame excuse for their laziness.

*shrugs* Not going to stop me doing 64Ks. Procedural content is what I find interesting, and I like writing tunes with 4klang. Therefore my intros are 64K by default.

just my 5 cents:

i can understand the asm orgas decision somehow, considering last years lack of entries and the general decline of 64k releases per year.

but what i dont understand is why 64k compo is expected (by all of us) to be used to the maximum amount of bytes available producing every time the next "best of all time" intros.

i know many people who would be happy to have a 8k, 16k compo, so why not consider 64k simply as the upper limit that it is?
i'm pretty sure (also speaking from my own experience) that there are several unfinished 4ks around which just dont quite get down to the 4k size limit. so instead of throwing out stuff and making it worse why not just add a few things more and release it in a 64k compo with a message like "8kb intro"? especially because many intros of that or similar size could actually compete with "mediocre" 64ks which use up all the space.

the fact that there are not that many really good 64ks (reasons discussed already) throughout the year would make this pretty interesting and would keep the category alive also for the few people who really want to get a full and good 64k done.

well, about what gopher said, i totally agree with and it's what I exactly done with my Revision intro.

but sadly, a lot of people whinned about "64k is the new 4k" or "could be done in 4k" etc because I used a lot of effects usually displayed in 4k intro :(

at first, my intro was around 40k, since i got some spare space I added as much as i can new effects to finish with 28 different screen in less than 4 minutes.

so, i think gopher's idea is good but people will still judge prod with the upper limit than the prod itself.

@gloom: well I did that just once, on the credits screen, all others effects are different code/shaders.
as musician (not a coder), i hope you can understand that a demo is not only pure "code-show" and there's is room for "art", so of course adding some screens is probably not a "massive feature" (especially for my poor coding skills) but when I am spending 4 nights to choose the right colors/camera path/synchros for each new effect i hoped to be judged as real 64k and not as boosted-4k compofiller.

that extra credit you mention i just another criteria applied to your vote, which is totally fine.
sure its more objectively comparable if everything uses the full amount of space available.
but just filling up bytes with meaningless or uninspired content wont make any intro better really.
therefore a good 8k or 16k might be the deserved winner in a 64k category, so what?

you will get some nice "too short" or "not enough content" or "could be nice as 4k but it's lame as 64k" :D
