fzck the GEMA

category: offtopic [glöplog]

the german "Verwertungsgesellschaft" GEMA, who is a german organization with the right to collect money from any venue that uses music of artists that signed contracts with the GEMA. They claim the venue has the liabillity to prove not playing any GEMA protected music, because the vast majority of artists were members, which simply is not true with only 60.000 members from germany.
the musik-piraten e.v. is in an effort to get as much free artists as possible to sign a formular, declaring they make free music. due to the thematic the site is in german.

klarmachen-zum-aendern.de

The goal is to prove that there are much more artist who publish music under creative commons. it should stop the bizarre mafia-like practice of the GEMA to collect money from venues where only CC music is played, like in this fine example. granted, the GEMA is approaching the organizer with a solution. to sign up, you need to give your name and adress, but your data should be handled anonymously.
if you have the time, i think demosceners should be concerned about this, since its not about the money, its about the art.

i wonder how much of an issue this is for demoparties.

to make this post more interesting, gema is the reason many youtube videos are blocked in germany, since google isn't willing to pay more money to clear rights on music than other national performance rights orgranizations demand. for that the gema has been hacked by anonymous before.

i support your cause 120% but i dont believe a signed petition will solve anything in that mafiaa related problem.

this issue is also quite present for demoparties, ask the evoke orgas who suffered what could be qualified as as extortion attempt from gema a few years in a row.

also dalezy and ronny pries have some nice stories on gema fucking them over.

Revolution will solve the problem.

ps: I don't think he's talking about a petition... IIUC, the initiative is to create a sort of a "formal, free music competitor" to GEMA. In other words, get German amateur musicians to sign with them, and end up outnumbering the GEMA artists. Or something like that...

the list is only about assembling enough names to show how wrong claim that most artists are signed with the gema is. that claim is used to justify the demand for any venue to deliver their playlists, if they didn't play gema licenced music and therefore dont want to pay, e.g. 200€ for an 8hour show.

I hope this effort succeeds.

F*ck the GEMA indeed. And the RIAA, while we're at it.
