Windows program to capture audio from other program? (kkapture fails to capture audio)
category: general [glöplog]
I want to do a video of a demo running in an emulator (for YouTube upload etc.)
By setting the emu to use OpenGL for output I got a very nice capture of the video using kkapture.
However kkapture doesn't seem to capture the audio at all,. Is there some other util I can use to get the audio (then I can reassemble everything in VirtualDub)?
The last option would be to hook my line-out to line-in, and record it that way, but I don't have any appropriate cable.

Have you tried recording from the "Stereo Mix" input that's available in Windows (up until Vista at least, dunno about Windows 7)?
there also used to be "virtual audio cable" or VAC that allows you to do this digitally - stereo mix often loops via an analog signal, if i'm not mistaken. no clue if its still maintained though.
i guess if you set a VAC output devide as default the emu should pick it, and then you can just record from the corresponding input device with your favourite sound recorder.

eh, to clarify: VAC is/was an application (shareware, if i'm not mistaken)
Audacity can record "what you hear is what you get". Freeware.
Audacity relies on Stereo Mix, though, I'm rather sure about that.
Also it's not Freeware but Free Software *nitpicking*
Thanks, the "Stereo Mix" input combined with the built in windows sounds recorder and a WMA-to-MP3 converter solved my problem!
Pro audiocards let you route signals quite freely, eg. M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and such. Then theres stereo mix, but this seems to be hidden on some drivers.
windows vista and up hide the stereo mix channel (if it's there) to prevent piracy.
see here how to re-enable it.

but if you have a standard soundcard of this era (2006 onward), it won't probably have this function.

sdw: what are you trying to capture?
if audio capturing doesn't work somewhere, i consider that a bug and would like to fix it.

ryg: I was capturing the output from Stella.
If you have even a low-end sound card, you can simply loop the line-out signal to line-in with a cable for a very decent capture.
I've done it with one of these, and there is no discernible loss of quality:
