New demoeffects?

category: general [glöplog]
yes, it's true. it becomes an EFFECT when you invent a stupid name for it :-)

In the 8bit scene, using effect names is still commonplace, since the hardware doesn't allow to ascend into the world of powerful 3d engines. Usually, it's all about 2d stuff, and then using effect names is still okay. Also, some effect names were thought up to connotate (indirectly) which parts of the hardware were being used. On a pc with its everchanging components, this can no longer be done. So the current situation is more or less the natural flow of things. More possibilities, more complexity, no need to give things a name since there would be too much of the stuff.

I invented the analogue flickerscreen. Squeeze you eyes together, spread your fingers and move you hand rapidly from side to side in front of your screen. Any image will flicker in a cool way. ...

I find it rather funny that people actually even compare things like rotozoomers and modern effects.

Rotozoomer is an effect consisting of two most basic operations in linear algebra: rotation and scaling. How more basic can it get?

Many demoeffects use scale and rotation operators to produce new effects. Any effect (ie. an algorithm) is abstractly a collection of operations.

New demos are just so full of new effects. The illusion of old demos having more original effects comes from the fact that we only remember the coolest of the old demos, and not the majority (>90%) of "regular" demos from that time.

And of course even the saddest of the doomsday prophets seem to think that the future is in realtime radiosity and pixel shaders... sigh...
