Reminder: Geocities closing down in October

category: general [glöplog]
This is a reminder that Yahoo will pull the plug on Geocities in October. I'm sure that there are several interesting scene-related sites hosted there so it might be a good idea to mirror them before they're shut down :)

I've read about a project that aims to download all of Geocities before closing but there is no guarantee that they will do that in a manner that makes said sites available in a manner that is easy to access.

This is happening years too late...

People who have a Geocities site in 2009 don't deserve to be on the internet.

given that it was already frowned upon back in '99 :)

Also that whole list seems indeed highly important. Since about half of those sites don't exist any more or haven't been updated since the late nineties.

A loss for the world indeed :D

i think it's not fair to be cynical here, no matter how behind-the-moon one might be to have a geocities, it's important to save the group releases that might be only on there, for scene history's sake.

okkie: Yes, quite a few 404's there...

But there were some sites still up with zip's to download. Just thought I'd say something before they're nuked :)

Nah, fortunecity :P
Seriously though, a page I put up at fortunecity for a school project in 1998 or 1999 is still online even though I've never logged in to my account since then, so I guess I shouldn't rag too much on them.

As for geocities, I don't remember having visited a site hosted by them in years, except for the odd japanese ones, so it won't be any loss when they go away.

Actually I prefer that (sometimes horrible) 90s web design to the hip web 2.0 crap of today :-) WWW in the 90s ruled.

No, no, no! It's way too early to be nostalgic about horrible web design from the 90s!
