Lossless demo kkapturing

category: general [glöplog]
discussing upgrading disk space, but not in the next weeks. (this won't change until probably the end of the summer period, basically)

Upgrade to how much?
While doing lossless HD video will be cool for future generations, me thinks is a bit wasting disk space.
I mean, H.264 with a fixed quantizer of 2 (or more, 2 works well with simple MPEG4) should give a visually lossless quality while reducing file size by a fifth or more, and since it won't be recompressed in the future or be used for editing, the imperceptible compression artifacts wont do much harm, specially since we are not machines (or at least most of us).

As a freebie, it would be (more) watchable as is, whereas with a lossless capture, you would defenetively need extra codecs or the need to do several versions of the video.

Unless it's an storage system of several exabytes, in which case I would promptly shut up.

Well certainly I think hosting lossless HD captures is kind of a pipe dream.

The problem being that any such project could only work by selecting certain demos only.

We might as well print those demos on film while we are at it.

However it's in the spirit of the archive so I conceive it may be interesting to have certain particular works encoded in such a way. The question is which..

i actually did once ask the prices for doing a 4k resolution film print from one demo, the price they quoted to me was $4k :)

maybe they misinterpreted the question a bit? ;)

no, video to 35mm film is just a 'bit' expensive. :D

I always save to a lossless format (huffyuv, rgb) in high resolution before downsampling and compressing to divx or whatever I need. I have lossless captures of all rgba demos and intros plus other 24 demos or so (tesla, liquidwen, pornonoise, lapsus, final audition, animal attraction, sts04, 195/95, iconoclast, fr019, ptct, zilog, liveevil, astral blur, despair, variform, this way, trocken, portal player, antifact, planet tisk, hyperventilation, fr30, its full of stars, if anybody is interested). Usually it's 2 to 4 gigabytes each, it is worth to keep them in lossless format. I think I do it because I'm a bit paranoid, it's probably a waste of space cause most of this demos work with no problem and can be recaptured anytime you need them. Dunno.

I reckon this idea is a few years too early. Realistically, we want full HD 60fps captures for it to be really worthwhile, but that eats a whole ton of disk space and bandwidth. Plus backup would quickly become a nightmare.

In a few more years, disks will be big enough and networks will be fast enough, and it'll be a lot more reasonable. We'll probably be demanding 4xHD in 3d then of course, but hey..

Well, MindCandy 3 will be full HD 60fps...

\o/ Just need a player that will run it :(

But that illustrates the point really.. 50gigs (?) for 30 odd (random guess) fairly heavily compressed (I mean compared to lossless, not implying the quality sucks :D ) demos. Uncompressed, you're probably looking at 200+, and for a year's demo output perhaps a few TB. Add in captures for the last few years and the guy responsible for managing backups at scene.org is probably turning white and looking through the job adverts ;)

When I have to mail Trixter DVD-Rs of lossless kkaptures, because it's faster than uploading them, yeah, I know it's getting too big for mass consumption. But.. it could be fun mailswapping demo discs again! :)

mailswapping \o/

mailswapping \o/ (... but actually, it's more hassle than just watching the demo even if you have to mess about, and probably more expensive to buy a blu-ray player than a recent gfx card ...)

better plan: visit a friend with a decent windows box, watch the demos there, and drink beer? :)

here's an idea which demos to choose to archive in all its glory on scene.org:
