Asshole virus

category: general [glöplog]
In other words, I wouldn't worry too much...it's not necessarily an Asshole virus.

El Topo: You bring a valid point, but the permission architecture of a unix operating system is not easy to bypass like window's. If and when Linux/Mac will get popular, and let's assume virus releases will increase, it'll take less than a day, in some cases less than 8 hours to fix the bug, unlike MS's 3-6 months.

Also, compare the list of viruses on wikipedia for the number of viruses windows have, not to mention, look at the DATES those viruses were released! 1995-2002, when the kernel was "immature" and growing. In Linux's case, more viruses will encourage tighter security among the developers.

Microsoft's fake UAC is a joke.

@LiraNuna: Which is what I was hinting at. When people say that Linux is safe the AV guys steps out of the shadows and say "Yeah, but what if..." pointing to that list :)

Well, the reality is that if you're on linux or osx etc. then you're basically pretty safe. At least compared to windows. That's absolutely no excuse to become stupid and stop taking precautions though.

Anyway, here's a more scenish way of viewing it: how many hours each year does the average (windows using) scener spend updating stuff and fixing stuff? And how many extra demos would that time buy if they all moved to another os? :D

psonice: I'm using xp with avast and spend 0 time on updating&fixing&virus hunting.

i´m with psyonice here !
i spent way too much time hunting...and afterwards being in no-mood to code is the most_lame thing at this issue !

avast gave me no findings btw ( after i installed some other OS and formatted everything before, haha :/ )
lets see how long that´ll last !
I spent maybe few days a year when suddenly all get fucked up because I hadn't turned automatic updates on in my pirated software. But just few days a year and that doesn't interfere with my mood for democoding. It would take me more time to make the transition from windows to linux at least for the moment, I'd need some time to learn how things work there and get used to new tools and compilers, etc, etc. It's not gonna happen any soon. The only way to happen would be if I was interested to know more about linux but right at the time I just want to code demos and windows provides me with all the necessary I need. Also I still insist on running demos on the real (windows) thing having full processing power, instead of emulated.

..in fact I have left two unused linux OSes (Debian and Ubuntu) installed in my HD partitions and in the past there was a menu from which I could choose between windows and linux. After reinstalling windows the boot was changed and I can't get into the old menu. Do you know which tools from inside Hiren's boot CD would be fine to fix this and what to be careful of? There are a lot of MBR tools there but I don't which to use and how and I am afraid to not fuck up things. It would be just nice to bring back linux in my system, not that I use it really, just to have it in any case I need it (for running linux demos or anything)

@Optimus: you´re exactly right...changing OS must be like "never_used_a_PC_before" ...thats what is me not trying to do it aswell...i´m pretty happy i got some steps further in windows so far !

had the same btw...after i installed a new OS yesterday i found out my XP was totally GONE....so i formated that HD :)

just reinstall a newer Linux-Install ;)
( our turkish-german ( german-turkish ) coder would tell you to install Pardus-Linux,which is a Linux-Distribution assembled by a turkish Team,he showed me and i liked what i saw !! and he went through a lot of Linux-Distributions btw ! )

It's called compiz, you know. It's an "open source" product that is usually bundled with another "open source" thing called "Linux"
