Is it just my card or my driver or...?

category: general [glöplog]

Now that I've a new gfx card (ATi, unluckily), I've tested some demos I couldn't watch before and also watches some that I infact could watch before. Now I've spotted several imcompatiblities... ATi card owners, does this also happen to you or is it just my card (HD2600XT) or my drivers or are these the infamous ATi incompatiblities?

- fr-052: platinum: random garbage
- fr-022: ein.schlag: the blue light that's supposed to move from left to right just illuminates the scene for the whole time
- fr-035 Deleted Scenes: random pixel garbage pretty close to the beginning.
oh, and
- fair play to the queen by candela: i can't see the robot, i just see a shadow.
I've got the random garbage in fr-52 platinum, too. Strange thing is, I have a Gf8600 GTS :-). So this can't be driver related, I guess. The other prods you mentioned are shown without bugs on my card...

We've had several problem with Nvidias and multisampling/antialiasing here. Some driver related, some card related. couldn't quite figure it out...

fr-052: platinum worked fine on X1600XT, now when I moved to GF 8600GT, I can see random garbage in some places (for example those cool greetings)

Hm, pretty strange... Probably "new hardware bugs"?
My experience is that many graphic bugs in demos have to do with AA-settings. For example, Popular Demo looks really broken when you've got the option "AA Gamma Correction" enabled. This feature is just totally useless... so keep it switched off. Other demos showed noticeable z-buffer problems when I selected AA in the demo's option window (eg The Chasm by Division).

After a lot of trial and error with different configs I have finally settled on this for my Gf8600 GTS:

- AA set to "forced 4x"
- AA Gamma Corrction set to "off"
- AA Transparency set to "off"
- don't select AA in the demo configs (the 8600 GTS will run it in forced AA anyway)

That way I NEVER experienced any problems again while having good picture quality throughout.

Hopefully this is of some use for anybody experiencing the same problems with their Gf8XXX or similar cards...

Aren't Catalyst THE drivers for ATI??
Is it possible to avoid using them?

CCC is just a "display" manager; there's no need to install it. and if you have the right sources (i.e. Sapphire instead of ATi website), you can even get a CCC-free driver installation. I fight against the .NET framework so the CCC wouldn't even run on my computer...
You want to install the plain driver package without the Catalyst shit, and use ATI Tray Tools:

Checkout the forums though for updated Beta versions of the software which contain additional stuff and support for the latest cards, as well as loads of hints and stuff for getting the best performance out of it:
