No demoscene.tv coverage of BP08?

category: general [glöplog]
I assume that this might be old news, but I just this minute noticed that there would be no demoscene.tv coverage of BP'08!
That is no fun at all! :(
I had looked forward to it for a long time - it is one of the highlights of the year sitting watching the stream from the compos and chatting about it on IRC. (Yeahyeah, I know that being on the party itself is probably better blabla...)

don't panic, we're on it. no guarantees, but we'll most likely provide streams for the compos (and scene.org awards) at least. we're working on putting this together, more details as soon as we get results :)

we'll have breakpoint tv. since this is all very last minute, we haven't yet made a final decision on the extent of streaming we'll provide, or what technology will be used. we'll announce this very publicly once we're there, don't worry.

you need someone short with sunglasses and a french accent to do interviews though. without kidding, i recommend kaneel. it'll also certify his attendance, so that's a win-win! oh and he's even bringing his hawaii shirt

no interviews, no fancypants partyreports, sorry. (at least not from our side)

the event team is understaffed enough as it is.

that's why i recommended kaneel! :-)

no worries. everybody knows it's the compostreams that matter, the rest is just about as important as whether that tall german moustache guy claims to sell kebab or gyros.

If there are streams from the major compos (preferably with the audience-sound included, you get a much better feeling when you hear the cheers) atleast my easter is saved!

yeah, we'll definitely have the unofficial ascii/ansi and fun compos covered, not sure about pc demo though!

it's a shame that the BP DTV reporting will be cut-back. I'm not sure how aware BP orgs are as to exactly how appreciated past coverage has been. As Sdw already said, the full DTV was a real highlight for many who can not attend each year. coupled with the IRC interaction, you really feel as though you are part of the action and the in-depth interviews and non-competition/awards coverage is genuinely entertaining stuff! :) I personally have really looked forward to the past couple of years coverage. great stuff.

however, i can see how this level of coverage is a great strain on resources. hopefully we can at least have coverage of the compos and awards this year. maybe consideration of a "subscription" DTV service could be considered for next year. I'd happily pay a reasonable price if it would mean the coverage was as rich and enjoyable as it has been in previous years.

Ahem.
I wish people would email me each time they do jokes about myself.

And by the way skrebbel, you didn't get me right the last time, I was talking about YOUR hawaii shirt :)
Amitari: Why does it matter what BP orgas are and are not aware of?

DTV cancelled a few weeks before the party and I seriously doubt the BP organizers are any happier about that than you are. In fact, they're seemingly trying to make the most out of what they can achieve on a very short notice..

kaneel: I'm sure Skrebbel will be fine with you wearing his hawaii shirt.

leijaa: ah, ok, I wasn't aware of the full story as to why it was canceled.

*me pointing finger at DTV only now :)

I don't know. Maybe covering BP08 and cancelling some over events this year would have been better to save the money for the event. Sometimes you have to set priorities.

As the president of ADAN, I take the full responsability for cancelling the DTV coverage.
I still think that's the most sincere decision we could take, and It wasn't easy.
Here's why :

1. The money
We at ADAN had the chance to put DTV high in our finance top list for the past few years, it's not the case anymore with our TV project. Add that DTV doesn't charge no money for covering any demoparty (organizers have enough items to manage within their financial balance, we don't want to be a dangerous extra cost), and you get the fact : DTV is something that costs us alot with transports and server reinforcements, while it doesn't make money at all. We simply can't keep it going the way we did for the past years.

2. Scamp
We don't feel in tune. Means that we would spend the whole party getting upset each other, ruining the whole experience. DTV team makes it for passion, this is not a paid job with obligations.

3. There's a stream after all
Sure it wasn't fair of us to leave the boat 3 weeks before the party, that's the point we're not proud about. Thankfully for everyone who can't attend, the Breakpoint team has skills and horsepower, everything to manage their very own stream. We send our best regards to the whole Breakpoint staff, in particular Kb and Ryg for their fantastic work.

Willbe : keep some money and energy for Numerica then, a lot of people would love to have a new edition next year ;)

Willbe: superofftopic: Do you know if there is an up to date working way of watching demoscene.tv with xbmc(xbox)?

Willbe: We all make it for passion. But seriously, this whole thing is hugely two-sided. Now I'm speaking on behalf of myself as the awards event director last year at breakpoint, so don't mix anything up, but I got to say: that comment about "not a paid job with obligations" did not strike me well considering what sort of obligations I was expected to keep to last year without getting much back.

But I can take that directly to you in an email instead of complaining on pouet.

Willbe: I'll skip the politeness bullshit and speak openly.

DTV is known for arriving late at parties. Sometimes the teams shows up up to two days later than agreed on with the respective party organizers. We had these situations at Breakpoint multiple times, and other german parties know the problem as well. As DTV needs direct video feeds, setup of cameras in front of the stage etc, them arriving after the party starts is a major issue for party organizers - safety issues, time constraints etc.

And what I did this year is that 3 weeks ago I wrote a polite mail to the DTV team, telling them that as we are going FulllHD/16:9 that the DTV team really needs to arrive BEFORE the party starts, and on the time we agree on. That's because the whole FullHD stuff is a MAJOR task with lots of unknowns and completely breaks the video chain we've been used to.

Me pointing out the simple FACT that DTV is known to arrive late at parties must have pissed of someone called "boss", who got my mail forwarded by Bunny/DTV.

And two weeks ago I suddenly got this reply:

"Sadly, I announce that after reading Scamp's email, the A.D.A.N.
director who decides the DTV budgets, said that he didn't allow the
defamatory remarks about the DTV team's work. Therefore he took the
decision to not finance the Breakpoint 2008 coverage at all."

So, don't come up with "financial issues", "there is a stream after all" and bullshit like this. Just because I asked DTV to arrive on time you guys got pissed and decided to cancel the streaming at the very last possible moment, probably to make sure we aren't able to find a replacement.

As you know by now, we've worked our asses of during the last 2 weeks, and now have got something that looks like an excellent replacement and makes DTV redundant.

And finally:

Did you ever hear about something called "demoscene"? Are you aware that NOBODY inside the scene is paid for their passion? This isn't a paid job for Breakpoint organizers, for Breakpoint attenders, for the scene.org team.
Therefore it's extremely silly for you to point out this is not a "paid job".

Nobody of us is paid, but we manage to treat each other with respect, and don't do stunts like DTV has done. We wouldn't destroy the work of others just because we didn't like some tone in communication.

So, in all honesty: DTV and especially the mysterious DTV "boss" can lick my sorry ass. We'll most definitely never again trust you guys or invite you to use our content/work/whatever.

this whole affair saddens me. i hope it doesnt escalate.

Ah, forgot one thing:

I'm also very well aware that running the DTV streaming servers costs a lot of money, especially during Breakpoint with the high number of viewers it generates.

This is the reason why I had sponsored a streaming server to DTV with 1Gbit of direct backbone bandwidth, paid for out of my own companys pocket and passed over full root access to the DTV team.

And if we had received a message "BP guys, we are low on money at ADAM, is there any way you can financially support DTV", we might even have worked something out in this regard.

That's why the "financial issues"-explanation isn't exactly well-received. "scamp sucks, he's mean" - that I sure can live with. I do however don't like it if people screw up other peoples work and passion (BP organizing are 60 people, BP visitors are 1000 people besides me) just because he doesn't like the way I'm expressing my opinions.
