Neural Impulse Actuators?

category: general [glöplog]
one of my jobs involves running EEG (electroencephalogram) studies. i can say with a pretty fair deal of certainty that the device would have to rely heavily on potentials measured at non-cortical sites - so that's elsewhere than the 'brain' part of the head. to get any sort of reliable event-related potential you have to average over many many recordings and you have to know where in time to look - i.e. you have to be predictive, rather than reactive. i know it sounds exotic, like the setup would be reading brain activity directly, but considering that a 10,000GBP hiZ active EEG setup would only just about be able to give *some* idea of the origin of signals i doubt this. even with a super-heavy focus on the motor cortex i don't really see how you could get more than basic lateral movement, i.e. knowing in general which direction the focus of motor action is directed in (left or right?). once you start putting electrodes elsewhere, OCG (eyes), muscle measurements et al. you know with much more certainty what a person is doing

maybe i'm really really wrong, but i doubt this is as exotic as it sounds!
