Chiptune is probably the most terrible name we could find.. It's like speaking of "guitar-music" in the end. Characterizing music through its main instrument alone.. then having to invent endless subgenres.

As much as I like YMCK for example, their music is sometimes just early rock tracks made with famicom plugins.

God god god...
Last time I posted some "funny" pokes about chipmusic, some people believed I was going jealous and all against it (no nicolas, i'm not hateful toward 8bit/chip/whateverbleepy-am I not bleepy sometimes? :)

Still, people like goto80 can make incredible stuff as much as virt can be faster than many respected trackers from the demoscene (considering I've been quite close to the #hellven crew years ago and I'm still close to some ex members), some jahtari people mixes greatly chip sounds and duuuuuuub and in the meantime, YMCK throws some fine cutey popey "pajamas" tunes...

Isn't the problem that many sweet "chip" acts are coming from non-demosceners while most chiptunes you can hear at parties didn't evolve much for years? (but yeh, I may be wrong and I can't judge music at all)
kaneel: If anything is pretentious it must be adhering to a whole class of music genres because of the instruments used. There's a characteristic lo-fi sound to "chip music", but despite that it's as diverse as drums-bass-guitar-and-vocalist music. I can understand appreciating the concept, i mean doing cool things with old stuff is a virtue, but when people group all music made with <x bit computers together as "chip music", and that suddenly becomes a genre, something's gone wrong, I think. Especially in those cases where the main selling point of the music becomes the novelty of it being done on old computers and consoles, while the music itself is secondary, sometimes even really bad.

Also I have a hard time coming to terms with people trying to make it all cool and hip. In my mind, chip music isn't particularly "street", rather it's what Radix, Subject, Monty, Chromag and the likes made in trackers using chip samples and the occasional 1-3 drums. It's cute and happy, sometimes with more melancholy or ethereal qualities, always focusing on harmony and melody rather than rhythm and trippy sounds. Then there's sort of borderline chip music which uses a few more sampled instruments but retains the same basic qualities. It's all very much linked to the demo scene and to trackers.

I mean, it's the same with classical music. You can make something strangely reminiscent of gabba using violins and cellos and so on, and you might call that an "interesting fusion experiment", at worst a frightful noise, but you couldn't call it classical music, because nobody who appreciates classical music would agree to the classification.

chip music is music made with chips.
so basically, if you stick to this definition, many tunes you might enjoy are NOT "chip" music but digital music as people used samples.
(that was just for some basic informations as i'm sometimes bored to hear about chiptunes that are not coming from chips but from digital samples -often rip :p)

As well as it's a basic myth (it seems) to judge chipmusic higher than other genres inside the demoscene. As you talk about melody and harmony (and seem to care about it this much) I would say it can be easy for some to plan on a sheet of paper by using theories, making the whole song elaborated, enjoyable... though quite uninteresting for anyone who beg for "moar".

Thats a normal thing I guess when trends are taking any obscure movements and turning it hype at a certain moment of the movements life (punk? hardcore? breakcore? timbaland?), it's boring but it's like that, there are people in this events that are around for a long time, you just never heard about them and thats all, they gather around a CHIP/8BIT/BENDING gig but some are doing UNTZ, others are doing BLEEPS, some would be more into POPBLEEPS and some would eventually be into jazz (though we shall avoid them for great justice).

It's also a personal myth to believe "we are the only one to care about these sounds", I know many people around myself who never heard about chipmusic who really enjoy it as it reminds them "the golden age of home videogames such as NES, SNES or GB), so why people worldwide could not enjoy it as well.

My 50cents.
kaneel: everyone knows that real chiptunes

ps, oh come on, get laid or something, kthxbye.

By the way: "Chiptunes" were pretty newschool back in the late 80s/early 90s, when Amiga guys tried to emulate the SID's timbral richness with 20-byte samples and blatantly failed. It's even funnier that this word which is so connected to small tracked tunes is now reused to describe stuff that's again way more "chip" and sadly way less "tune" :)

(that's why i really prefer the term "micromusic", because it not only reminds of "micro computers" but also to the size of the part of the brain of micromusicians that's devoted to something that's not unlikeable. Yes. Unlikeable, so it says here in your file: Liked by noone.)

pfff kb, wtf. call it what you want, but no matter what i will rather listen to saskrotch or goto80 instead of the 120948th sidcompo lameass 80s melody tralala. "sadly way less tune" - thanks god!

Discussing about definitions and genre-stickers won't help, guys. Believe me, I know this first hand. :)

@Okkie plz, don't timbaland my phrases KTHXBAY (plus, it's totally out of topic the way you used it, KD SAID WE ARE NO DISCUSSING CHIP BUT MICROMUSIC).
@Zest: just proove you're in the mass, sorry kthxbye.
@tom: there always are people to tell others they are pragmatic enough to live without genres but still, it's a nice weapon to drop genres whenever you want, try it someday.
@ps: HAPPY ARPPEGIOS HAVE RAN OUT OF HAPPY!

I don't really give a shit kaneel :)
added on the 2007-10-16 11:50:19 by okkie okkie
It started with not giving a shit and it ends becoming a jazz musician.
Pay attention okkie.
dip: nice attempt at a retort, but neither did I mention "the 120948th sidcompo lameass 80s melody tralala" anywhere, nor did you get my point at all :)

(i could now explain how my point was that even the word "chiptune" itself had nothing to do with the whole actual 8bit era and how tiringly silly all that senseless categorization and this whole discussion BB Image is, but what the heck)
