heh okkie: just admit that repeats or remixes are more honest than sampling (but less creative...)

Where does the genius of sampling end and the god awful 'hey, let's rip the whole fucking track because its copyright just expired and stick some knob-end on top of it to rap/sing some shite about material wealth because it'll make us a shit load from all those teenage idiots who'll buy this mess because heaven forbid they don't' begin? *breathe* ...rant over

zest: I will never admit such a thing, ever. And if you think that's true, you have no clue what sampling can imply.

MagikGimp: common sense should be enough to distinguish 'Since I left you' from that horrible Black Eyed Peas song using 'Misrilou'

Daft Punk and Jus†ice don't work quite well each other. I didn't like quite much the "†" album, it didn't shift my expectations after listening to the D.A.N.C.E. single. And some people say they are the heirs of DP? :/

D.A.N.C.E. isn't so good at all actually.
Water Of Nazareth promised something at least... but they failed at delivering some interesting content, they simply made the agent do his job.... and he knows the job as he's behind Daft Punk too and owning edbanger.
there was an article in computer music about sampling about hhmm 2-3 months ago. The law, and how it is with creative e.g. a part reworked and used as a building block.. or the opposite where its just lifted out and nothings done to it.

Amen break iss probably the most famous thing used so much along with a few other well known breaks.. things like the roland 808 and 909 etc. also

I used samples, but mainly breaks and they don't form the bulk of the tune and their re-arranged/chopped up.

creative sampling is one thing (a very small chunk), ripping the guts out of a tune and doing "not a lot" is another matter.

Most people don't have the budgets to get someone into remake/re-record a bit of music. I mean , yer they had to before samplers were about. I couldn't ever afford the real versions of the synths I use as software versions these days, but thankfully they are within my budget now.

theres a line between being inspired and being a total plagurist. Everyone who makes music is inspired by others, some openly admit it, some hope it won't be relised/sussedthey aren't re-inventing the wheel.
Cratediggin is an artform it self. Just to try to find a record, that no one heard or used before is an challange. But real fun !

heh i've stumbled upon a (great) japanese track that seems to steal so much from Daft Punk, quite ironical :D

Doesn't remind me of Daft Punk much, but it sounds a lot like She or Capsule.

it's Ike's rap II and not Ike's rap III (wrongly credited in the Portishead liner notes)!! Okkie get your facts straight!!!!1

src: with full permission as well! They even performed together at the VMA's and Kanye West borrowed the Pyramid for his tour!

tempest: you are absolutely right sir. I just checked the 'Sampled' cd it's on and it is indeed Ike's rap II!

Speaking of Kanye West, I've read that he started by making mods with his Amiga. Quite an interesting tidbit, but really hard to confirm. It was written in some local paper paper at the time he was having a gig here in Pori (I can't even remember was that a direct interview or some kind of an artist profile), but can't find anything concerning that on the internet.
That could very well be true, West is 31 and has been making music since forever. Trackers are widely used in the hip hop world anyway, so it wouldn't surprise me that he started out on an Amiga.

I recently saw these two fairly famous dutch rappers (Pete Philly & Perquisite) on tv and they use Renoise for their beats :)

some people still use oktaMED - incidentally the same people who make point and click adventure games for a website.
