Demogroups need Ascii nfo's!

category: offtopic [glöplog]
asciiart is great. I like when groups take the time to work on every aspect of a prod including .nfo's etc.

Yeah if you really can't read it, you prolly have some lame Courier-New . :P Be sure to use Lucida Console on PC and Topaz and/or Microknight on Amiga. :d

Infofiles. Let's talk about noters. A lovely concept in the C64 scene. Just about every demo there has a noter, which is an oldschool writer with some music, effects or pic in behind, or just plain text with music! It's just great that just about every C64 demo has such a noter attached in the disk! Wouldn't it be great to adopt the idea in PC and other scenes? Have seen it few times, like in Crystal Dreams 2, or very few other PC demos too (One with textmode scrolling perfectly, rasters and adlib music!). Lovely! Have happened to see such a CPC noter very similar to C64 ones, only once in TASM, a CPC assempler from Exodus which were also in C64 as they say. Gotta find that again!

But yeah, good ASCII and nfofiles full of text rocks in demos. You see weird text deformations and also read a lot of technical or thoughts of the creators and greets and stuff! But thing about C64style noters too :)

infofile.txt (or whatever) isn't the same as file_id.diz. file_id.diz should -not- be crammed with info and stuff, only the bare essentials. if people want to go on forever (like we in excess do :), you can do that in a infofile instead.

..and noters are cool, but noone takes the time for 'em any more. :)

Well time.. I understand if no one wants to do big text's or noters with every production. But you can request a nice nfo from some Ascii Artist you like, use that for some weeks or months, then take another one. etc. ~_° ?!

@gloom, absolutely !!! i get in rage every time when i see group cramming ALL the infos in a file_id.diz. especially when i got to trade it to bbs's (yeah there are still some of them around) and it screws up the file-lister. remember, a file_id.diz is max. 45 chars broad and 13 lines long, not more !

the worst thing is, even some "oldschool" groups like ACiD, fairlight and scienide screw up the file_id.diz rule. shame on you !

noters are cool, but if you want to find out what are you about to dl, or what is that stupid xfhg291.zip, you found in your HDD then file_id.diz, and *.nfo is a great way, because they work in a very limited environment too (is this the place for buzzwords like platform independence, and hardware compatibility? :) )
So i prefer .diz and .nfo.

Yeah! A simple text nfo file to read some first important bits about the prod and then a nice oldschool noter for more infos!

I'm not fully sure why everyone is ragging on Diamonddie. I understood that there is no official standard for the high ASCCI chars (128-255). So in effect you could have some nice looking ASCII on Windows that looks like poop on Apple (for example)

My "opinion" is not an opinion, it's a fact, so I find this flamewar quite amusing. :-D Oh well. Amusement is nice. Some comments in this thread are so stupid it's hard to believe it's even possible.

The scene art which is often called ASCII art is really _text_ art. And here comes the opinion part: most of it is really ugly.

The whole _point_ of ASCII art is that it's viewable on all computers - maybe not your pocket calculator, but on Windows, DOS, Linux, BSD, Amiga, C-64, Macintosh etc. You can include it on your webpages, signatures, post it on newsgroups, even flood it on IRC if acceptable. You can even print it on huge sheets with a matrix printer and decorate your room, like some people I know do.

ASCII art existed decades before the demoscene was born. And still the real ASCII art people produce a lot better pictures. Wonder why? Because sceners are so arrogant and ignorant and rather draw lame logos instead of pretty pictures?

ASCII art and graffiti are quite different.

Sure, you can't always read graffiti at first glance, but it should nonetheless look eye-catching: Nice colours, lines, style, form, etc.. That sort of detail is immediately noticeable, even if the underlying text is hidden.

Unreadable ASCII art simply looks like a random collection of computer characters.

But hey, to each their own.
haha - what a great threat (lol - shifter;).

and i always thought that asci was supposed to be the scene's h.i.v. syndrome...

file_id.diz supposed to be 45x10 max ...

and pc blockascii sucks... pc newschool/amiga oldskool
looks cool if its great looking and readable style. bah

diamondie, fact!? fact is, this is scene and it was never called text art in the scene, it was, and still is, called ascii art.

here we all talking scene things and i dont think pictures with elfs or homos are more interesting than some twisted ascii logos.. ofcourse, everyone got her/his own sense of style.. but its just plain stupid to argue with something whats been in scene for ages and is refered to as "ascii art".. go talk on your forums and newsgroups about real ascii art but in scene this is a term to refer to.. ascii art!!

besides, who are you to define whats the point of ascii art is? or its fact again?

+ putermans rite, ever heard of petscii?

well... does someone knows if analogue will add a ascii/ansi compatible font for the nfos or does he plan to convert it to pictures or whatever make them readable?

i dont think analogue care about ascii, and i really hope he doesnt, there are more serious things about pouet that needs to be fixed
