The Irish Demoscene

category: general [glöplog]
Well, I'm all UKScene, I live in the UK, and I organise a party for the UK Sceners but... I'm Irish.

Am I the Irish Demoscene?

i remember a dude called mosh of a group called forsaken design. he was irish, was living in finland for a couple of years though, but then went back and then poofed from irc and i never talked to him again.

also, some months ago i was reading some amiga diskmags and there were some mention to an irish party and a couple of groups.. i believe dad1916 knows more on the issue then i do since i went on the amiga diskmag reading adventure looking for a demo he was asking for on scene.org forums..

ps: We may have done! I'm yet to meet another Irish scener. One thing I remember from my youth was basically people not being as up to date as the English tech wise. I moved over in 1989 and got my first glimpse of a Spectrum then (and the scene followed soon after when I saw the Enigma Tapemag bundled on Sinclair User).

It's not like that any more though. I went over recently and my little cousins have pretty decent rigs now, but generally shit connectivity.

Well, The Fingerbobs were from Scotland I think. Also, AdamBracegirdle/Cle is Scottish isn't he?
Gargaj's pretty much the Scottish demoscene if he's drunk enough :)

Hey! I'm Irish, but I'm not much of a demo, or a scene. Maybe I'll make a demo over the weekend and I too can join your ragtag band of Scenestronauts.

I has red hair.
Long life to the Queen ! BTW, is there any kind of demoscene in UK ? It's really weird that there has always been a so small demoscene activity over there. Maybe, because british peoples are too much sober for the demoscene. I dunno. ^-^
I'm sure irish peoples can do any better than that!
(I would really like to be part of a nice UK demoparty one day)

There always has been some activity and interest for the UK, but it was never on as large a scale as the various continental demoscenes. I think a lot of this was down to the very early rise of the commercial entertainment software industry in the UK, and this would have siphoned off much of the available creative talent which might otherwise have done something more appropriately 'demoscene' instead.

It is also interesting that the 'demoscene' is overwhelmingly a European cultural movement, with only a tiny interest from other hi-tech cultures like the USA, Japan etc, where you might otherwise have expected a greater input from them?

Haggis and McDougal/The Bagpipes are from Scotland too.
I dunno like, if you check the vids of the Magnetic Fields parties in the very early 90's, the're pretty large-scale affairs, with shitloads of people entering compos, watching demos, having Sensible Soccer tournaments, floppy-swapping and buying porn.. *Proper* demoparties, innit? There were even a few Swedes/Finns there; foreign members of DCS etc. And that's despite being up in North Yorkshire/Lancashire - I'm sure there were even bigger events down south.

Things are on a much smaller scale nowadays, but I don't really mind it much - it's nice to be able to meet up with a manageable number of people at the airport and then do a stealth invasion of Breakpoint or wherever. "FUcking retards Inglands is hear!"

Anyway rc55, you know I'm Irish but until I get my nice green Irish passport like yours, I can't hold my head up high. I think I'll send off for it one of these days.

I'm the only Scottish scener I know. It's a shame that the UK scene is as little as it is. Apart from SD and raww, which I'd have to travel down to 'ingland' for, there's really not much happening here. :(

dont forget the pubmeets..! and the breakpoint+asm+other party trips. the uk scene had a real slump 5 years ago or so and really used to be one of the worst scenes in europe in terms of activity, but now it's been quite lively in the past few years. still relatively few people involved but those that are have been more active. a pretty good set of releases over that period as well.

by the way, evilpaul is a scottish resident, although he's english.

UK is very good at doing great music while Germany is very good at doing great demoparties. You can't have it all !

Well, Germany used to raise very great composers some centuries ago like Beethoven, Bach, Paniq but it sounds they are now focused on demoparties, designing nice cars and demos.

(oh and shouting Hallo Was? all the way)

I plan on attending SD. It ties in nicely with my 25th, so it gives me one more reason to get down there this year.
