new amiga computers?

Yeah, but aimed at the people who can't accept when a platform is finished.

So it's kinda like the AGA Amigas?

Did you even read the rest of that post? "classic architecture" = AGA Amigas. And yes, the Amiga hardware platform that was ahead of the competition around 1990 is outdated by 15 years. This new thing has nothing to do with it, and cutting-edge hardware hasn't had anything to do with the Amiga scene for about 13 years. What's your point?

Well, I bought an AmigaOne, and I use OS4, and I think its nice.

xeron: you're a psychopath.

Why? Because I bought a computer as a hobby, and found it enjoyable? is that not allowed?

As a serious note, when 2/3 of computers sold are laptops, why is the new Amiga a desktop?
added on the 2007-05-02 14:53:52 by Sverker Sverker
Expensive to produce them i guess. I'd fucking love an OS4 laptop.

How expensive can it be when the cheapest laptops sell for 500e? (In Finland, probably even cheaper elsewhere)

Sure there's the economies of scale thing but still...

The thing is, TFT panels aren't really all that cheap, then you have the cost of the case (just tooling up to make the case itself can be very costly). Basically, you have to make a metric fuckton of laptops to bring the price down enough to actually sell any. But the market for OS4 hardware is very small indeed.

xeron: The expensive production and lack of laptops are the main reasons I think they should have made the OS for an existing hardware platform, like the PC.

I always thought OS4 looked really nice, and I'd love being able to run it on the computer I already have. Making me buy new hardware for no good reason is just nasty though. Especially when it's inferior and overpriced. :(

Tribao: You have to remember that companies like Dell produce in 100s (or 1000s) of times the volume Amiga Inc. will be. That makes a huge difference.

A bunch of whiners on that thread were saying they couldn't find it on Amiga.com - it was 2 clicks from the front page.

Note the price difference. I'm thinking the amiga.org post is Canadian dollars, and the Amiga.org is US $.

Xeron: that means it's gonna be like 250 quid. You best buy me one too (:
Ok ya know, even tho the Canadian dollar is traditionally weak, it's not THAT weak. I have NO idea whats up with the discrepancy of the 2 prices. I hope the .com one

This new system will be offered at a suggested retail price of $ 489.00 and be a complete offering excluding monitor in a finished design that will provide customers with everything they need to get started.
stays.
Right, if one compares the specs and wording, like I just did after thinking about it for a second, one can see that one is the ENTRY level price, and one is the POWER system price. So the 'power system' price isn't on Amiga.com. Oh well. I'll still take an entry system over a PS3 or Xbox 360. (I'll be taking a Wii, tho.)
Nah, apparently they plan 2 models. "Entry Level" with the $500 price tag, and "Power System", a dual core machine priced at abt $1500.
Still from what i read OS4 is not smp-ready yet, and Hyperion is in court with Amiga Inc.

They should definitely find sexy cases and names to sell... ;)

would be nice if they could make it a fixed hardware platform.. seems backward but i always loved the idea of having a console with a built-in devkit. but i guess it's not a fixed platform at all and basically some kind of powermac. pc is more interesting.

Not to me, since I really love using OS4.
