PC performance questions about Winxp media
category: general [glöplog]
I just bought a new media PC with Windows XP Media installed. I quite like the media side and being able to kick back with the remote, but even though the machine specs are a lot higher than my last PC, it's not performing as well as I'd hoped.
I find it lags on 3d games and demos (Geforce 7300LE) that ran quite well on my Geforce 6600GT and I get the odd slow down here and there.
I'm wise to spyware, background tasks and all that shit, and I've disabled most unneccesary stuff using msconfig, except for the media services.
Is Windows XP Media known for performance issues? Or could it be my graphics card that sucks? It comes with "turbo cache" which I believe eats your system Ram.

The 7300LE is a "value" part which will only run the most rudimentary of 3D applications. Your previous card is more mid-high end and will no doubt run demos and games a lot better.
If you look up 7300LE benchmarks you'll get info confirming that.
Although counterintuitive - as a general rule it really is the second digit (xXxx) that determines the performance of your nvidia graphics card.

Your first culprit is the 7300LE, which gets it's ass served by the 6600GT in all regards.
6600 GT:
500 MHz GPU with DDR3 RAM at 900 Mhz
7300 LE:
333MHz GPU with DDR2 RAM at 333MHz

Oh, in addition, iirc TurboCache is a rediculous marketing term for "using your slow ass system ram as graphics ram". Due to the architecture, it just cant pump pixels fast enough.
Thanks guys, it all makes sense now and this has really enlightened me!
I'm on a budget, but can get a Geforce 7800GT in my price range. I assume this would this be a big improvement?

yup, 7800GT is decent.
