Icons'07 - 16-18. February in Helsinki, Finland

category: parties [glöplog]
Since it's only three weeks to the party, this is a good time to remind you of all the cool things we offer:

- Friendly atmosphere with lots of sceners and competitions
- Internet, food, sleeping halls, all the essential stuff
- Beer at the partyplace
- The possibility of remote entry submissions, so there's really no reason not to participate
- Cool prizes (possibly and probably)
- Demoshows, DJs and non-stop action for the entire weekend.

The official web site is currently being updated, but we would like to announce here that we have added an additional compo in the Altparty spirit. We know it's a short notice but we hope people will make cool stuff anyway:

* You can take part in the dynamic/interactive compo with a demo or an intro.
* The productions participating in this competition also participate in the regular competition (dynamic demo into the demo compo etc). This means you can win both the demo compo and the dynamic compo with a kickass dynamic demo.
* The productions will be shown twice in a row.
* The productions should be different each time when they're run (if you only change palettes or something like that, we will remove your entry from the dynamic competition. This compo offers more possibilities so use them)
* User interaction is allowed and encouraged. Should you require an input device that is not a mouse or a keyboard, they need to be plug and play (work out of the box without installing drivers) and you need to provide us with them.
* The production must work without extra hardware (for example, if you want to use a webcam, it must also work without one)
* If your demo requires user interaction, you need to be present during the compo to show your work. If you're not, the compocrew will do it for you (consider this a warning)
* Dynamic demos are allowed to access the Internet, as long as it is guaranteed that no third-party material will be shown, due to copyright reasons. Should something like that happen, your entry will be disqualified from both competitions (so please, no google image search abuse, however fun that might be). We will also limit the available bandwith so don't try streaming video straight from your server. The demo must also work without internet access.
* Dynamic intros are not allowed to use the Internet, since they could easily bypass the size restrictions.
* Should something that breaks the Finnish law or compo rules happen during a dynamic demo, it will be stopped immediatly and disqualified
* It's allowed to write data to production's directory or system's default temporary file directory. The production must also work from a read-only media.

See you there!

is it really copyright infrigement to use images.google.com ?

It is if you take random pictures from the Internet. Or it might be. I (and the other organizers) personally have no problems with it but since we're cooperating with a school, using school servers etc. we decided not to take any chances. I agree it's a bit of a letdown, but..

Cool, I really hope this will resurrect Altparty going-arounds a little bit in 2007.

Well preacher, I guess it is if deep linking is copyright infrigement. Which I'm not completely sure it is.

We're not completely sure either. It could be considered as a public performance of copyrighted work. And in any case, the entries will probably be distributed from the school. As I said, we decided not to take any chances to be on the safe side.

Preacher summed up the basics on the question about using random googled up images nicely, but I thought I'd write a bit about it anyway.

The Finnish copyright law (which we have to live with, and which shouldn't differ that much from the rest of Europe) is quite clear about rights of use, licencing etc. Basically, you're not allowed to use anything without the authors approval - unless said author has approved the use beforehand. With images.google.com for example, many if not most images are copyrighted material and haven't been released for unrestricted, free use by the author. Using said materials might deem your artwork derivative under Finnish law, and thus a copyright infringement ensues. And then there's indeed the part about public performance etc. This is how I remember the faculty at my school hammering it down, anyway.

Personally, I think it's a drag. Things like this shouldn't be allowed to constrain creativity. Unfortunately, we as organizers are responsible to our service providers, in this case Stadia, which basically is giving us a huge load of necessary stuff. We need to keep 'em happy, just in case there will be an Icons next year as well :p

let's get inside a scener's head:

"hum, i will have a demo ready around 15th february, and i'm thinking of delivering it as a remote entry... hum... let's see: we have icons, but we have also breeze... hum... which one will be? the finnish or the portuguese party?"

we all know what is going to happen, right?

I do think you announced the dynamic demos' rules far too late anyway. In my mind they are *much* harder to implement than standard demos, and there's no way you can do anything decent in a couple of weeks.

I agree with announcing the compo very late but we still hope for some clever implementation under the granted possibilities here. At least I have plenty of ideas that would be quick(as in 1 - 2 weeks) but still fun. Now start making demos with your already interactive VJ engines dammit ;)

No way! I'm already late on another project for the end of this month, and I have other projects already for february and march.

Since you guys all talk about boring stuff I just want to say I'm coming.. To Icons that is ;)

Yeah I guess talking about demos is boring.

Jeenio, going inside sceners head: "Hmm... I have nearly ready demo. Should I support these smaller parties or go on and polish it for Breakpoint?"

Hoping to see some good releases from both Icons and Breeze, though.

Okay, we just heard that there's a rumor going on that Icons is cancelled. This is definitely NOT the case, Icons will be held just as planned and it will rock.

No, really, who's the asshole who thinks something like this is funny?

it must be timbaland who's spreading the rumours

And you're spreading it! So... is it true? ;)
