what cheap gfx card?

category: general [glöplog]
I want a better graphics card, so I can see more techy demos or play some newer games, but i don't want to spend much more than 100€

My current gfx card is a "MSI MS-StarForce GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE" so I thought maybe I could get something at least slightly better for 100€ these days.

what you say?

the 6600gt seems to be a good deal. do you know if it's a lot better than my current card?

it has ps3.0, that alone is worth it, if you want to watch "techy demos"

...and honestly, who doesn't want to watch techy demos?

the 6600GT is the perfect companion :> but it begins to be a bit old for upcoming games...

I have a 7800GT but I find myself still liking oldskool. Yeah, I know... just say the word....

there's plenty of room for both oldschool and techy in my world!

just to mention an ati card: x1600 pro. that's also a shader model 3 card, it fits in the 100 eur price range and might be a bit faster than the 6600 gt. but even a non-gt 6600 is still good for the demos.

I've a x1300 and it is a shit. It has ps3 and that shit, but it looks as slow as my old geforce 2 TI in fillrate. So, whatever you choose, take in mind you shouldn't get the lowest card or you might be buying something slower that what you already have

Just lately the first 7600GS have dropped below 100€ (pci-x version). With the gf7600 cards, even the GS seems to be faster than the old 6600gt so it might be at least worth considering.

How about this one?

Oh sorry... you said "cheap"...
Nutman: The Cirrus Logic GD5446 would cost you about $5 on eBay, so yep... cheap. ;)

tribão: Oh, and it installs in Zorro-2 slots and there are drivers for AmigaOS for it? ;)
hehe, Picasso IV, that'd be somehing :)

BTW, I don't have pci-x... Is it still "the future" of gfx cards or was it just a hype? When you answer, just assume I have been living under a rock for the past 100 years or so :)

now i'm both confused and interested about the relation between Picasso IV and that Cirrus Logic board, though.

that was supposed to read pcie anyway, evil little hand...
a 7600gs should be available for agp as well for like 120eur or so, dunno if you want to spend that.
of course you can go with a 6600gt as well, still should do for most if not all demos

I was looking at buying a newish laptop.. And was wondering about the ultra portable ones.

They usually have those intel 950 accelerators.

Are those any decent? Do they support pixel shaders in a practical way (fast) .. Do they support opengl equally well they support directx?

Any cards worth it from ATI?
Are higher numbers always better?
How do I know that the card I'm going to buy will have ps3.0 support?

The 950 GMA excels in one thing: being a piece of shit. Not worth looking at unless you're into writing software renders ;)
