FBF needs help

category: general [glöplog]

We're doing terrible. I'm not sure why we're doing so bad (excluding fbf0.1 and fbf02). I think its cause I'm lazy, and Rattra isnt motivated.... I've stepped up my coding in the last 2 or so days (with Boston Defender being a warmup). And I've thought of some really great coding exersizes, I think.

If anybody has any constructive advice they can give, weather it be coding exersizes, tutorials, or just plain "do this, dont do that's" to help us out.

Sounds silly, but our goal is to release at least one demo that gets 10 thumbs up.

What have we done so far to change things?
-no more ripped music
-went opensource
-started using c++ instead of FreeBasic
-thought of regular coding exersizes (not implemented yet) that all coders (all 2 of them) for fbf have to take part in

okay i just make graphics but

- look other demos and look some cutting edge music videos just for kicks
- get proper graphics dude .. maybe outside scene (deviantart or somewhere else, who is interested)
- practise and dont release if its not good (or relaese it as fakelabel shit/minus release like some people do)
- just hang around demoparties and dont care if you are lamer, you will learn, we all started from zero.
- if you still can't do anything proper, just start drinking beer at demoparties and shout "folibaa" "precalculated" and get wasted ;)

-no more ripped music

That's a start, but remember that the music not being ripped is not enough, it has to be good too.

-went opensource

The demoscene honestly doesn't give a rat's ass about this.

-started using c++ instead of FreeBasic

It's not the tools but the end result what matters... C++ surely is a better tool than FB though.

i have three advices for you.

1) watch
2) more
3) demos
well, as a coder, what should be my mindset while i watch these demo's? when i watch them, i kinda forget about developing, and just start to enjoy them... hehe

kusma hits nails!

And design is very important! Which means, either make everything look like a cheap 3d game (for that look at Smash Designs demos) or like cubic numedia doodles (for that look at anything Bypass) or like some weird fantasynerd's lucid dreaming (for that look at ASD stuff)

Good luck young yedi

And the Redsox SUCK!!!!! :)

kusma: I've seen both versions of that quote.

10 find a random topnotch design company
20 check their demoreels
30 implement the cool effect realtime
40 go to 10

what i had in mind was watching lots of demos will help you identify what has been done a billion times, what you should avoid in other words.

i suppose it is a great advice for a group that releases demos that only contain a single tunnel effect with a scroller.
...how did you do that tunnel again?... ;-)

It gets worse.... Lots worse... Rattra quit the team, leaving it all to just me. I guess FBF is recruiting.
