keyboards for coders

thec: I have that keyboard too, it rocks

I have the crappiest keyboard from microsoft... The function keys are grouped three by three instead of four by four, and each time you start the computer you have to press "F Lock" to actually use them, otherwise they have useless functions like "Help", "Undo", "Fwd" and "Print"... I mean, who the hell forwards emails often enough to need to be able to do it in a single keypress? The same goes for printing. Undo is just two keys, so why bother? Help? Heard of F1? GRAWR!!!

(calculator button is nice though)

linde: yes, that variation is even more annoying, true, i used it for 20 minutes at evil's place once and nearly succumbed to a tentation of smashing it into the wall.

I do like my aluminum mac keyboard for my mac pro. Had to get used to the switch of the CTRL / ALT / WINDOWS BUTTONs though - but works great and is easy to clean and never gets really nasty, like my previous keyboards often used to :). http://www.apple.com/keyboard/.

yeah well I just use f1-f3 (not help) in linux to clear, compile and run.. I don't do much debugging actually so coding in the dark is ok :-)

I was after the logitech natural keyboard but for some reason the one I wanted wasn't available so I just kinda bought this one, and I think it's great... except you hit "g" when you try to hit "h" with left hand and such things in the beginning, but I suppose you learn to use the right hand for the different keys :-)

All I want is a nice, normal keyboard. So I got one.

Turns out that the "We care quality" part was bullshit, so I'm still on the lookout for a cheap robust set of keys.

my keyboard is attached to the monitor, real weird! but it's fun, because when other people type on it and want to press "Ctrl", they always accidentally press "Fn"!

linde: hint: when they put "we care quality" in quotation marks, it's not to be trusted :-))

kinda too bad, cause otherwise it'd be a definite buy for me, too :)
great way to make white label stuff more attractive.

I still dream of the IBM 286 (?) keyboard I had as a kid. The clicky sound it made, combined with the touch, was perfect.

Try the Cherry G80-3000 SLCxx (xx = US/DE), that's the click variant. Very, very nice to type with.

radiantx: WTF do you need the windows key for? If you want to access the windows start without the mouse you use ctrl + esc.

i use the winkey key combinations a whole lot more than the alt key combinations. winkey+d for desktop, winkey+r for run. all the time. in fact i start most software with winkey+r.

Me too, including winkey+e for file explorer.
there's tools for this, people...
e.g. ct's ac'tivAid has lots of neat plugins making your life easier...

I agree that finding a proper keyboard for coding is hard though. I'm thinking about geting the Logitech G11. Wired, backlit, programmable keys and an USB hub. The key layout is quite good, though I prefer a bigger RETURN key...

programmable keys

I think you somehow missunderstood "keyboard for coders"...

they should put more easter eggs in keyboards anyway. like if you press winkey+scroll lock followed by home and end simultaneously, it would enter hamlet.

orbiter: Windows + e -> Explorer window

Also the menu key to access the context menu without right clicking.
