Uber scene database, opinions wanted

category: general [glöplog]
haha... yeah, looks like I did just implement that without seeing that there were half a dozen people here asking for it :-)

Nice stuff Gasman, looks promising and it is a nice complement to Pouet.

gasman: when a user has multiple credits on a production, wouldn't it be logical to group them together in the listings?

Nice start, Gasman.

I have added some info and thought it would be good to be able to add alternative handles to individuals. Time-frames would also be another nice feature. They could be used for the time a handle has been used as well as for the time a scener has been a member of a specific group. To cater for cases of leaving and rejoining a group, it would have to be possible to define several time-spans even for the same relationship (e.g. scener - group).

lol this is getting complex, KISS! keep it simple :p

looks promising, concerning the structure. needs a good designers job though. :D

about the policy - when i add the groups that i belong to - how's it concerning the former groups? (been in a shitload of groups before, and released a shitload of tunes for their prods as well =)

oh, and:

http://demozoo.org/sceners/12900

look like the same person, could those be merged? =)

(which about solved the former-groups mystery, seems i'm a tad hyper at the moment =)

The design is alright, as far as simplicity is concerned, but I kind of not like the font and the colours... looks a bit like a linux geek's 'documentation page' (if there was even such thing as documentation for linux).

For the third step, the hues should be balanced out, just like pouet...

Keep it Google!!
((^___^))
I must admit I really like the simple interface. Also I find it a big PLUS that there is NO forum. People should/could use alternatives like pouet :)
Wahey, we're really motoring now!

kusma: yeah, credits / roles are a bit 'freeform' at the moment - nothing to dictate whether people should enter several credits for the same person, or one credit with a role like 'Code, Music', or write 'gfx' instead of 'graphics'. At some point I want to do something more structured with that (to identify which people are generally musicians, that sort of thing) but for now I think I'll let it kind of... evolve.

Re multiple nicks - there's actually a lot of horrendously complicated logic in place for dealing with those (and specifying which ones are important enough to show up in credits / bylines in their own right, versus spelling variations and abbreviations - for example, it's worth distinguishing between prods by Gasman and prods by Shingebis, but it's not worth distinguishing between 'Factor 6' / 'Factor6' / 'Fcr6' / 'F6'). At the moment it's only admins (aka gloperators) who can edit those, though.

In fact, that's a general point - so far I've mostly followed Pouet's approach of allowing everyone to add but not edit. Based on the feedback and experience so far, though, I'm starting to think that that's overly paranoid (even allowing for the, erm, volatile personalities on the scene) so I'll see about opening more stuff up. More destructive / easily-abused things (deletion, editing URLs etc) will probably stay admin-only though.

Merging / splitting users still has to be done manually, so keep reporting those (here or through the 'Found a mistake?' link) and I'll get onto them. No doubt after I've worked through a couple of hundred, I'll have some better ideas about how to automate it :-)

trace: yep, a 'latest edits' logs would be a nice addition. I've started logging a few actions (I need to know who to award the beers to, after all...) so I just need to extend that a bit and output it nicely.

noname: heh, timespans on nicks / memberships is exactly the sort of thing I had in my early plans before deciding "this is getting stupid now. Nobody is ever going to use or request a feature like that" :-) One for the long term, I think...

Design / proper logo: yep, agreed. The current design is very much an "it'll do for now, to get the site up and running" affair. I was planning on getting a few more essential features up and running before tackling that, but any volunteers to come up with something better would be very welcome indeed!

Hmm, forums. At this rate it looks like we'll soon need one to keep track of site issues / feedback and stuff, if not a general demoscene discussion one. I doubt there'd really be any mass migration away from Pouet anyway - still very much open to opinions on this one...

Isn't sort of the point of specifying roles to be able to compare them in a civilized system? If so; pull-down choices for the most common roles (music, graphics, 3d models, animation, design, code etc.) should be put in place. One could easily be allowed to add multiple roles to one handle, like in the real world... i mean.. the real demoscene :)

The way I see it, the common roles like music / graphics are also going to be the ones that are most easily identified by a text search (e.g. for graphics, we'll look for 'graphics', 'gfx', '2d graphics'), so I don't think it's too big a deal if we just collect them as text now and worry about classifying them later. That way we save people a bit of work when entering them (selecting stuff from a dropdown is usually more hassle than typing it - right?), and also I don't have to decide on a list of common roles in advance and then get people asking stuff like "uh, does 'human beat box' go under Music?" :-)

Which do you prefer though?

parapete : sewing
parapete : snorkelling

or

parapete : sewing and snorkelling
personally, I'd go for
parapete : sewing, snorkelling

but I'm not too fussed - it'll be easy enough to translate between them once I start doing stuff with that data and need to settle on one or the other.
