killer by cncd - how does it really look?

category: general [glöplog]

mindcandy crew picking your brains again. :)

we're trying to figure out how killer is really supposed to look. in winuae and the video capture from amidemos, it takes up only the top 3/4ths of the screen, while the bottom 1/4th is a grey box or nothing. trixter captured it on an a4000 and insists that it takes up the full height of the screen, no box.

so, compare..

trixter's dvd capture:

amidemo capture & winuae:

check out the aspect ratios of the circles in particular.

so which captures are correct? and if our captures aren't, then how do we configure an amiga to make them look like the amidemos captures?

Erm - NTSC versus PAL maybe? 525 lines versus 625? you've got to squash an extra 100 lines onto the screen in PAL - that's why if you boot an Amiga up to AmigaDOS, the bottom bit of the screen is empty, yet it isn't if you manage to get it up and running on an NTSC set-up.

NTSC is shoddy - colours look really bad, not sure if many PAL users will see the benefit of HDTV...

phoenix, killer/cncd autoswitched to ntsc screenmode so that they could cover the whole screen with only 200 lines (64000 bytes) instead of having to draw 256 lines (81920 bytes)... and yes any scanline skipped really helps for speed since chipmem writespeed is only about 7 megs/second ;)

confirmed live, I'm running it on the telly to my right and it has switched to 60hz refresh... but the initial circles didn't look bad... and also the second one with the girl on the right looks OK and not squashed... so the correct aspect ratio is the one from winuae...

to make it look like that on amiga, you could try removing the NTSC driver from the devs:monitor drawer (just move it to some other place temporaly)... then the amiga will assume you can't use NTSC mode and only use PAL
