your best party memory

category: general [glöplog]
here's a selection of mine. strangely they mainly involve booze, so god knows how i can remember them anyway.

that night at asm 2002 (i think it was) when we and a bunch of swedes, including various members of noice, got piss drunk. gnilk and mazy (i think it was) both ended up in hospital for different reasons. i believe i woke up in a ditch somewhere outside the arena, but that could have been 2003. they sortof blend into one these days.

that night at asm 2003 (i think it was) when me, meteorik and cryptic went clubbing in helsinki, chatted up a lot of attractive girls, and cryptic disappeared - he showed up later on covered in hair, and everyone to this day thinks he shagged a dog.

the riot-e preparty for asm 2001, and going clubbing with various mfx members and pyro afterwards.

mekka symposium 2002 - particularly the first night, but the whole party blurs into one good memory - also watching my first (coded) demo on the bigscreen during the compo and getting some applause was just great. also nice to discover that german beer has a much more positive effect on me hangoverwise than beer from other places.

the assembly 2005 prizegiving, cos it was the first time i had won a compo and been there to collect the prize. and undercover boozing with noogz while finishing che.

the strange joys of working on a prod for the entire party. at the time i claim to hate it cos you cant go and enjoy the party, but there's just something about it - maybe i like the pressure. particularly bp2003, where i tried to code the first night but was too drunk, but coded the rest of the time and it was so incredibly cold i had to get a coffee and just hold it to keep my hands warm enough to type. and also bp2005 where i worked for almost the entire party and made the compo by 5 minutes before it started with death&taxes (buggy piece of shit that it was).. there's something kindof cool about that. =)
the whole of bp2005 was great fun actually.

sounds rather like 2005 from the stories i heard.

We were waiting for our pizza in the garden of a restaurant near the Antiq 2001 partyplace. Suddenly, a gust of wind lifted the sunshade, making our round plastic table fall over Ebola/BNS, and his glass of peach juice poured onto his tshirt and pants. It was terribly hilarious, and he was totally upset about my laughing at his trouble ;)

2005 was relatively mild =)

Stepping onto the stage to pick up the 1st prize for "Kilofix" at BreakPoint this year was pretty huge for me - but somehow the presentation of "Kilofix" in the compo felt even bigger, because almost no one knew we had a demo ready for BreakPoint. But it was sure nice to win... ;)

(I'd like to apologize to the person, who wanted to interview me after the prizegiving. I tried to find you in the crowd, but gave up after having looked for you for half an hour. :) Contact me, if you're still interested in that interview, hehe)
smash: i believe it was asm 2005 because of my later memories of snowy and cryptic(?) performing bohemian rhapsody with kb preceded with their presentation of the infamous story of "we went into this karaoke bar but they wouldnt let us out. SO WE SANG OUR WAY OUT!"

nah, snowy and cryptic have been in trouble for a lot of years :)
assembly has felt a bit quiet the last 2 years actually. compared to how the rocks were in say 2001, anyway. that really needs changing this year.

I remember at jamiaca floppy swap 89 when me and musicman went into the city to buy some of that nice weed we got a hold of in jamaica. but the dealer only had speed so we thought "wtf!?" what is this. but then again fuck it. we bought some speed and we got hooked on this shit. damn never speedcoded this fast and i said to mr.musicman that we should start a group that does demos. and musicman said "yesh!!!! let's call them speedfisters" because he was fisting some of that nice speed up his nose! best party memory ever.. since then me and musicman has been hooking up on some nice meth once in a while to do demos.

This thread needs more stories.

My first demoparty was in 1995 and was Computer Convention 95. This was a party arranged by the demogroup phoenix (unknown) and was the party when I met Breakin (whom I formed outbreak with later on). I also met Yodel for the first time and a lot of file sharing went on :-)

That party was a total failure. First off there were practicly too big intentions, and too little people showed up, so the word on the street was that they were paying off the extremly expensive hall for years afterwards. They used some kind of tennis facility, and payed by the hour :-) To add to the story, on sunday morning, there were tennis players approaching and wanted to play in there, they probably hadn't made the right booking or something and there were a lot of tention going on :-)

The best demo party experience ever came from a well filled Yodel Conference a half year later where 150 people were squeezed into a pretty small demo hall, with a seperate demo showing room/sleeping hall. Hack&Trade were constantly running into the sleeping department at night wakening up everybody with their small synth playing recorded messages of burping at different pitches :-) The friendlyness of the party was just superb, and was the first time I met Anvil&Ally from Obscure, and Liket from Goto 10. (they released 380 volt there).

At Yodel Conference the following year breakin wanted to attend, but he forgot to print the map on how to get there, so his dad (who gave him a lift) had to stop at a petrol station to connect his computer to a wall socket inside the store and have a look at the map ascii map :-) Funny enough, they were not very far from the party at that place :-)7
My first "hit in the face" demoparty was The Party 97. Three big halls, electricity short which lasted for 6 hours and blew the city electrical fuse away... kick-ass.

At later years breakpoint comes to mind, and some various Assembly memories, but I hope to back them up with an Icons visit this year!

Keep posting events you guys (and gals)! Gargaj's car rental story made my day!

I just came across another memory.

At BP08 (this year), I started talking to britelite on the irc channel, and we confirmed that we were both at the demoparty. We thought we should say hi in real life so we discussed where we should meet or wave or whatever, and britelight just said "are you sitting by the outbreak guys in the middle?" - "yes?" and it turned out we sat 2 seats away from eachother. :-)

Bizarre '99, was that the one where it was 7635 degrees Celsius inside the party hall?

It was a nice party though :)

niels: You seem to have lots of love for spain, is it because of all the transvestites?

Mmm.. Spain.. Transvestites and tapas.

* bemmel atari days 94: (more of a copy party :))
+ seeing some early falcon demos there, talking with the then still active users there..

* siliconvention97:
+ meeting dutch atarians irl, grey/shadows, feske brothers, mrpink and tat, mclaser before he was called lotek, madbutscher before he was called kradd.
+ wingleader ordering "kipmacneuk" at the german mcdonalcs (een echte boer he).
+ i was told that mrpink was a small englishman. the english part seemed to be true but he looked like 7 feet when i first saw him! he was looking at an 8 bit demo along with a big crowd. when it was over the crowd moved away. mrpink was standing on a chair..
- also had my first taste of partycoding and pizzacola constipation, but i guess that happens to all of us..

* interjam 98:
- the party was disappointing
+ the trip there with thematch' brother was awesome. driving in a lpg powered 1982 volvo and no lpg stations in sight, lol.. so we took a detour through belgium to fill up the lpg tank there and then head in to germany. we of course get stuck in a traffic jam in of of belgium's beautiful smog-covered cities. the driver opens the window to stick out his head and scream: KUTLAND!

* breakfast at paracon for the first time :)

* eil99:
+ experiencing tinker's atari teenage riot blast and the weirdness that is tinker in general.
+ being ill for 2 weeks after that party because of fucking bad smoker's air in that cellar/tunnel they called a party place :)
+ havoc's frikandellen service ( i turned vegetarian very shortly after that )

* demozone 2005 (i think?):
+ meeting dutch pc peoples for the first time.
+ discovering that sceners enjoy the camping life.

* main2 (2007):
+ chipmusic / demoscene cross-over. coding during the day and hitting the dancefloor at night!!
+ i think schmx passed out on vodka. an hour before that he was talking gibberish. strangely, an equally pissed stu did a hell of a performance.
+ checking out the city of marseille. making remarks about ze caca every 20 seconds or so.

thec: so YOU were the swedish guy sitting 2 seats away from britelite who i thought was also some random finnish scener! we talked! you said "huh, want? no we're swedish", and i said "oh"!!

you are random indeed.

How's pizzacola conspitation a bad thing? It's an evolutionary development that stops the partyplace bogs from getting too clogged up with sceneturds. Although I still generally get a hotel room *just* to use for nice, long, comfortable shits during the graphics compos. Actually, that's my top memory from Breakpoint08!

Second place with Quantum Disco Brothers and scene.org awards with (core) nominated were rather memorable, both being demos that I designed mostly.

680xx convention 1993:
some kind of highlight where ATARI guys showed what friendship is. we collected money for tommys stolen harddisk and lazer gave their 1st price to ripguy as a replace for the stolen computer. (who ever stole those?)
also if all modules/songs were missing after that. it was a great party and I think it was some kind like a surprise what we showed on falcon. perhaps some of the best times I've ever spend with friends.

Ok, this thread deserves a bump. Thank you everyone for sharing! I guess it's time I add to it, but I'm not really sure where to start.. Ahm.. Ok, let's try some chronological highlights..

The Gathering 94: My first party, totally clueless to what I was going to, and it was great! I need to dig up the two page interview I gave to a local newspaper together with some friends.. I know it's at my parents place. ;)

Kindergarden 1 (1994): Spontaniously deciding to organize a party a day in advance. People I didn't know at all calling me up the next morning asking me if we were organizing a party that night. It was a blast, even though we were only 20 people or so, and it was the beginning of something that has meant so damn much to me all these years. And yep, we're celebrating 15 years of Kindergardens this year! =)

Odyssey 95: Huge hall. Few people. The party organizers were hoping for 1000 visitors, some 70ish showed up. Slummy/Spaceballs and Dominei/Spaceballs stripping on stage. They had two phone lines in the hall free for use, and Morgoth/Cadaver happened to have a modem with him. First thing we tried was calling Dial Hard (Hi, Fury!), but unfortunately for us the lines were .no only. We still managed to trade a whole lot during that weekend though.

The Happening 95: Getting to know all the guys from Contraz. Musician Pinocchio/Contraz coding the only demo he ever made called "Du må ikke drikke så mye, Fuzz" (You shouldn't drink so much, Fuzz), refering to the fact that Fuzz/TRSI got really drunk and puked the night before. Also getting to meet Snuffy/Scoopex and Size/Andromeda face to face for the first time.

The Party 95: My first party abroad, which needless to say is an experience in itself. Closer. Cyberlogik. Meeting a bunch of foreigners.

Kindergarden 6 (1996): The biggest Kindergarden to date. The only one where we ever had a line outside waiting for us to open. It was very stressful to organize, but it felt so damn good.

One of the better organizing details needs a little bit of backstory; One of the organizers (or helper, guard, or whatever he was) of The Gathering had been a pain in the ass for Amiga visitors claiming that whenever they had power problems it was because of Amigas modified with harddisks lying on the table outside of the chassis, non grounded cables and crap, so he cut several peoples cables off instead of just removing them from the socket, or even politely asking the owner to do it since he was often sitting right there. During KG6 he turned up with two of his friends asking to join in with their PCs. All three main orgas turned up at the entrance and we discussed a lot back and forth whether we should let them in or not, and even though they offered to set up a LAN for us (which wouldn't really do all the Amigans much good) we eventually decided to turn them down. Damn that felt good. ;)

The Party 96: Meeting TONS of people I now knew through BBSs and IRC. Not even sure where to start.. Read my old party report for details. :)

Intel Outside 4 (1997): Arriving at a pure Amigaparty with more than 1000 visitors. (Keep in mind that Amigas were losing ground in Norway at the time, while still being huge in Poland.) We were 8 norwegian guys, and I think there were like 2-3 other foreigners there. Asking around, and then walking casually up to Trashhead/Mystic, who I swapped with at the time, and then telling him who I was. His response was "You're shitting me!". Then Numen/Digital Corruption did the exact same thing to him 10 seconds later. Priceless!

Seeing Petro Tyschenko dead drunk on stage handing out Amigas to lucky ticket winners while singing "Amiga for you, Amiga for you, Amiga for everyone, Amiga for you!" to the melody of Happy Birthday, while the organizers were writing "DRUNK!" and an arrow pointing down at Petro on the big screen behind him.

Also worth mentioning is that there was one other totally drunk guy in his fifties there, namely Marek Pampuch, the editor of the polish Amiga Magazine. :)

Ehm.. This is getting too long already.. More later perhaps. :)
