wow.. sending out a guy to check damages.. now that sounds like a good thing to do, obviously the guy who will check the damages will cost more than paying up without checking the stuff.. (just doing random tests).
stefan : here they dont send a guy. First they use police protocol/record ( how is it called ) to determine if you are one to blame for accident ( in some cases it cancels insurance payings, you know ). Then you _have_ to come to insurance company and some guy(s) check damage and choose which parts to rapair/replace.
i think everything but schools. and toilets maybe... :D

stefan: in denmark it works as follows:
1) wreck your car
2) call your insurrance company and inform them about the case
3) get the car to a mechanic
4) insurance people estimate how much the damage is worth (in their mind)
5) mechanic starts working magic!

it works pretty much the same way in sweden. an estimation is made, and the insurance company decides if its worth doing the repair. in the case of an old rusty and severly wrecked car they will give you money instead, and send the car to the junkyard instead
i've heard they send the car to the russian maffia...
