Mekka/Symposium demoshow

category: general [glöplog]
if you could just replace 303/acme by square/pulse,
same coder, still in the vga era ..
i prefer personally square, 303 is nice too, but square had really nice graphics by haplo and i like better the way the effects are linked in square..

btw, allmost perfect selection for one hour ..

Weasel: I'm not part of the organizing and so I'm at least lucky that I can present a demoshow the 2nd time in a row. So probably *you* have to talk to the orgas ;-)
I also don't think that 4 days are to long, especially not for the huge number of compos and different platforms. At a 3-day-party we'll need probably 24 hours without a break to show all compos.

ts: Black & White is not running anymore, same with Planet Logus (yes, by camorra), Square looks more polished than Tribes so I prefer this one by Pulse. Yes, Verses is by EMF ;-)

fl: Ok, I will probably put Square in the show and kick 303. Any serious arguments against this decision (except for the vocals in 303)?

Several people here asked for Error:808/Shock. Which DOS demo should I kick for this one?

ps: as coder working on a demo, you usually can't simply go out because you got some kind of deadline pressure... hell, music compos are annoying enough to most non-musicians, no point in having demoshows and other noisy stuff on the bigscreen all the time (this is my personal opinion now and got nothing to do with the ms orga team, mind :)

About E:rror 808 by Shock: This demo was very good at its time, but nowadays its way boring and the sound is also not *that* impressive. So I see no demo in the current selection that I will kick for this one. Imo there were also some better releases by Shock.

i can't believe noone mentioned "lifeforms" by halcyon. it's a fucking classic and rocks my world. hail the finnish gods of the past. :)

ryg: coding at a demoparty is not the best idea. everyone knows that. independant of what is happening on the bigscreen.. as a demoparty organizer myself i say show all possible demos/intros you can. you are free to disagree ofcourse but renting a big screen which is only properly used half the time seems very folly to me.

crest: looking good. would only replace pulp or hplus with deesbab or you am i you am the robot. i can live with zilog instead of energia.. just make sure you play hplus with the soundblaster not the gus. (even though its still pretty interesting with the sound bugs on the gus :D)

flod: 303 is like.. the vocals start and everyone smiles and realizes what they are doing somewhere in a little corner of the world far away from home in a smelly room full of male teens. square has its moments too. but 303 is more of a classic..
wouldnt be a bad theme for a scene.org poll though.. need to talk to matti about it :)

i think you could kick "Propaganda/INF" for another demo.
the demo is hmmmmmm. i don´t know...
2nd Floor by Incognita or
Enlight the Surreal by Noice or
Live Evil by Mandula
fits better in this show. (imho)

ps, uh what? a poll about 303 vs. square or everyone smiling and realizing they don't need to answer to that poll at all? :)

i think 303 and square are both great demos. if you have problems choosing, just show them both! :)

crest, the current list looks now good too. after all it's up to you what to show, so in case you don't want to change it daily during the next three weeks before mekka you should close this discussion at some point.

ja,
ok let's keep the selection, however it's completely impossible to make a one hour selection that fits to everyone tastes.

about the use of bigscreen, i think that the main disturbing problem is the sound system, if you put it to high volume all the time that's disturbing, and not even for coding or finishing a demo, even for speaking. but if you put it to low/average volume, you can still work on your computer, and/or have a talk with your friends, and if you want to see the demos, just take a seat in front of the screen.
i really dislike parties were there are no demos played on the screen, we don't have all killers pcs, old pcs, oldschool 8bits machines and amigas at home, so parties should still be a place to watch demos..
and one hour isn't enough =)

well i'm not either completely pro a use of the screen 24h/24, but just a bit more than half of the time is enough.

ps: It's for sure that I'm playing Hplus with the SB16 coz there is no sound at all with GUS PnP (or it's starting *very* late). Replacing Pulp with anything else makes not that much sense coz Pulp runs just about 90 seconds. If you really want a poll about 303 vs. Square then arrange one (but don't fake it for your our own needs ;)).

diver: I will re-check the mentioned windows demos again and see if it will affect my decision ;)

fl: I'm quite sure that my demoshow will not run only on low or average volume (especially saint ;))

ALL: IT'S A GOOD TRADITION TO HAVE SOME LIVE PERFORMANCE ON THE STAGE WHILE 'SAINT' IS RUNNING! SO WHO WILL DO IT THIS YEAR? :)
added on the 2002-03-09 15:46:24 by Crest Crest
ps: I think I have released about 2 or 3 intros/demos as of now that weren't 80% done on a party, so well, just shut up about party coding, ok? :) 90-100% party productions i was involved with include fr03 [not really released on ms2k], fr04 [#1 uc4gw demo], fr05 [#2 evoke2k demo], fr06 [#1 dialogos2k demo], fr09 [#6 to2k1 demo], fr014 [non-deserved #1 tp2k1 intro], frminus04 [#4 woest2k2 demo], natriumlampen [#1 evoke99 in4k], project: 2501 [#4 dialogos99 demo], hifi8032 [#3 dialogos99 demo] - and on most of these parties, i left during music compos and alike to get something to eat. and i'm certainly not the only one doing that, simply judging by the fact that i've never went to eat something on a demoparty in a group smaller than 4 people :)

yes, i'm certainly quite extreme on that point, but OTOH you seem to be quite extreme on showing demos on parties, and we try to respect both kinds of people on ms by having liveacts, demoshows and alike, but not something happening on the bigscreen the whole time.

crest: anyone who wants to :) don't think you need to explicitly request that, people will do it anyway :)

oh, and another news: crest, don't know who told you you had a 60 minutes limit, because you don't :) you're the last timetable item on friday, so there's no real time pressure here, except our rule that we don't want to do bigscreen stuff during nights.

which means: 2 hours of DEMOS (that's acknowledged by rawstyle and chaotic) is absolutely okay. reboots are not counted, and we won't switch the beamer off if you show 2 minutes more or anything :) just try to stick to about 2 hours, since, as I said before, some people want to sleep :)

ryg: Great, that's a word! So I can put some other nice stuff to the show without kicking something else.

ALL: Don't flood me now with tons of new demos that you'll see on the big screen. 303 *and* Square will run in the show, also probably Into the Dark/Halcyon, Stuff/Xtacy and some Orange stuff (probably Super Television). Fresnel 2/Kolor will be also in the show. Same with Nature v2.0/Three Pixels and Gerbera/Moppi Productions

crest could/would there be time for Alien sex clone?
added on the 2002-03-09 22:46:17 by gekko gekko
I just forgot Stuff/Xtacy in my above list (will be 2nd demo after Pulp). So we have 15 DOS demos and 7 Windows Demos now, total running time about 105 minutes. I think it's a good selection already and the main goal is not to fill exactly 120 minutes but to have a cool show with a broad selection of demos (it's also possible that some unwanted reboots are needed at the partyplace which are taking additional time).
added on the 2002-03-09 23:12:50 by Crest Crest
Remove that pulp demo, thanks.
macaw: Sure I can do. I would replace this one probably with Nation 0/Jamm or Deesbab/Orange

gekko: ASC isn't running here anymore.

Konsum have got nice music. ok it´s a video style demo but it would fit.

gekko: I'm not sure but I have some Win32 versions of the clone series. Anyway I think there is better stuff.

rp: 'Ich kann euch sehen' was running a bit unstable last time when I have tried it. Maybe chosing 'Totraum'.
