Demoscene books revisited

category: general [glöplog]

When "Demoscene: the art of real-time" was published there was some active conversation on the scene books. We've compiled a list of all the books and articles that we were able to find (including the utterly fancy BibTeX references):
http://www.kameli.net/demoresearch/

Any additions and corrections are welcome. There's a lot of online material missing plus the Hackertales & Hackerland books but they will appear later. Especially foreign book and thesis references would be nice to have: I'm quite sure there are for example final theses about demoscene in the Scandinavian countries.

What is the purpose of the BibTex links? I think something is broken.

i.e.:

@article{Haavisto2001,
author = {Maija Haavisto},
title = {Diskmagit haastavat lukijan},
year = {2001},
number = {7},
pages = {72},
journal = {Enter}
}

Is an example of all I see on your links.

Or is this meant to serve as some sort of standard metadata system? Sorry, I'm just not familiar with BibTeX.

I've started work on a dissertation for my msc about optimisation, and that will include a reasonable amount about demos. it won't be finished until at least next autumn though.

BibTeX is the standard way of storing the bibliography when writing with LaTeX, which in turn is widely used for scientific texts. By storing the bibliography this way it's easy to generate different reference formats from the same data. So yes, the garbage you experience is intentional ;v)

There was a thesis in Sweden in the mid-nineties called "Pojkarna framför datorn" or something like that. Linus Walleij (Kingfisher/Triad) wrote an e-book around the same time called "Copyright finns inte", which has been printed since.
DJ: Thank you. I added the Kingfisher online book to the page. Can you tell us a bit more about "Pojkarna vid datorn"? There's very little info in the net -- a couple of bookstores have it (but unfortunately don't ship to Finland) and apparently it's been used as course material in some Swedish universities.

Marq:
Thank you very much for the links to my homepage! It may be safer to link to http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0102122/ (or http://www.hugi.de/adok/) instead of http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0102122/index_articles1.htm though as the name of the html document might change in case I redesign the site again some day.

BTW, there are some more scene-related articles by me available at other locations, such as http://www.diskmag.de/. (Maybe I'll include them at my homepage as well when I have time for that).
