MS GS wavetable synth and All Notes Off

Hi all. Having been encouraged by superogue to play with Windows 1k prods, I'm trying (like many before me) to wring some life out of the venerable Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.
Turning individual notes on/off works as expected.
However, I can't persuade the thing to respond to AllNotesOff with midiOutShortMsg(hM, 120). Also tried 121, 123, tried putting channel number in the 2nd byte, etc.
I know CC 120/123 aren't universally supported, but does anyone know if I'm missing something, or have a cheap way to stop all notes?
