How to take a bath when Peepin' Genevieve cuts off your boiler.

Living in times of crisis brings new, odd challenges. If one wants to keep alive in UK, when there's no i. e. gas in installation or Big Brother (or Sister if someone declared heterosexuality) cuts off boiler pump - he has to get ready for conquering new difficulties every f00kin' day. Y'now what I mean?

I woke up with situation like above, and believe me there's no friggin' way that something or someone force me to have no bath, when I paid bills for it. Cold bath is a solution only if I want it. Not as an enforced means.

There's the riddle then. How to heat up a bath using tea heater? Very English device. It would be good if we had one. We have none though. Only thing we have is triangle - kindergarten music instrument (bought for producing ringings for some drum and bass recording sessions (vide: Kabuki - Vendetta)).

Using it as a heater is easy. It has resistance of 35Ohm. Voltage in socket is roughly 230V. Maximum charge is 16A. Let's calc if it's fine:

R=U/I, so R=230/16[V/A]=14Ohm

14 Ohms is minimum resistance, that we can use in this example, which would be better to lift to 23 Ohms, as 16 Ampere's is pretty much, and fuse may trip below.

So if we measured (using universal meter - must have for all men) the resistance of our triangle, and we get value higher than mentioned 23Ohm, we happy.

Next step is even easier. We cut off socket of extension cord and soldier cord to the sides of a triangle, leaving GND away and joining only live and neutral wires.

Last question is how long is it gonna be?

Completely usual bath is in size of 1,5x0,6 meter and we will dip lower than usual, up to 0,25m. Why? To make it faster. So the volume is roughly 0.25m^3, which is roughly 250 kg of water.

Energy for heating up 250kg of water with heat capacity of 4200[J/kgK] by 30 degrees is:

E=mcdt=250x4200x30[kgJ/kgKxK]=31,5[MJ] - verbally thirty one mega Joules !!!

Power of our triangle-heater is P=U^2/R - 230^2/23 - 2,3kW. That means it delivers energy of 2,3kJ per every second.

Dividing energy required by the bath, by our power, we get the time of warming up:

P=dE/t - t=dE/P=31500/2,3[kJ/kJ/s]=c.a. 13600[s], which is 226 minutes or 3,7 hours.

I am ready to wait this much for having a nice dip!!!

That was interesting. I thought a triangle would have a resistance closer to 0 ohms.
Electric charcoal starters can be used for warming water too.

Naayy. End of the ends I quit the idea and washed my butt in the sink and kettle of water... (£150/mo for a gas and coping like in a tent).
