So, how dead is it?

category: general [glöplog]
I don't think that the success of Shadertoy has anything to do with toxicity at all. Even over there there's people with questionable communication skills going at each other.

Shadertoy is entirely focused on editing shaders and sharing source code, pouet does not do any of this. The social network component of Shadertoy is also more focused on the source code (you can fork, the comments are often source feedback or golf)

The only place on pouet that has comparable dynamics is the ultra-small sizecoding scene (where the source is easily available by disassembling)

Pouet and Shadertoy are very different kinds of platforms with very different scope imo.

Pouet rulez! I never saw what was good about Demozoo, anyway.

I should add: I would absolutely love to see the scene starting to focus more on sharing source & transferring [coding] knowledge, instead of focusing on artistic feedback. I know this is somewhat difficult because of the 'rivalry'/tech race mindset from the past, but it's also a thing with "there's no platform that allows to share code & comments on it".

If Pouet.net was going to be shut down, then maybe I'd have to. But many, many prods don't have Demozoo entries yet, so why bother?

Even concerning Amiga demos, I'd go to Kestra Bitworld first before Demozoo!

Literally zero graphics and music prods have entries in Pouet, but can be found in Demozoo. So what was was point again?

well, few people comment prods on demozoo. that's why I'm here instead :)

Why are you interested in the scene then?
because we need even more releases with coder colors!!!

We used to have bonus packs included in the zip files of the individual Hugi issues which contained source code. The coding-related articles from Hugi can be found here: https://hugi.scene.org/online/coding/

@adok: that's a good point, I'll start at some point to include source code into my release archives as well. And add GitHub links consistently :)

* the scene is a really nice social concept. Many sceners are really good friends. Also there is a mutual respect and common ground because of the shared interest between all sceners.
* Beer & Code is my thing.
* I love the competitive aspect of demoparties.
* I like to get feedback on stuff I make.
* Here is an audience for showing off my math skills.

We might have misunderstood each other btw - I was not claiming that I want less feedback on aesthetics. I was suggesting that more feedback on code would be a good thing, as we have lots of insanely skilled coders here

I have no comeback your honor.
I don't think pouet has more toxicity than any other platform (see Twitter). In fact, it may be less than average.

You can surely thumb down the production... but I actually think the bigger problem is too little comments or simply lack of interest, too small user-base / audience. The truly negative non-constructive comments are quite rare.

As for pouet bbs, well, it's definitely not the safest place out there. It is a go-to place for cheap thrills. But isn't it how it always been? I was not here from the begining, but I've heard stories about legendary pouet dramas in the past that were order of magnitude more dramatic than anything today.

As a former* dramaqueen i can tell you that "whining" and "2nd hand embarrassment" have sure been invented here... ^.^

The good thing about the pouet bbs is, that nothing gets deleted and everyone is able to check if someone evolved over the years or stays idiot.

Im not sure about myself, but i guess i am (a bit) less idiot than i was back in the days *LOL*

*still dramaoriented and willing to participate, dont worry. ^.^

Don't you hate stumbling upon your old prod comments? I sure do.
"thumbs up omfg roulz"
I feel like that with comments I made two weeks ago

hahaha, definitely! I made so many cringy comments on farbrausch prods 20 years ago, when I was a teenager still and my handle was venomsoup 🙈

yeah that could be interesting if we could come back 20 years after and just change your thumbs: I was a fanboy but truly, with time, I don't think it deserved my thumb at all.
All Top-Ten prods of all time are more than 13 years old,
some of the highest ranked prods are even 20 years old!

so is the scene dead?
as dead as your understanding of statistics!

Pouet just is biased towards old farts.
