About copyright censorship

category: general [glöplog]

1. There will be a jubilee of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff soon.
2. I want to make a demo that features Rachmaninoff music.
3. I want to manually put music on six channel AY as accurate as possible. There is a MIDI laying around, but still a lot of fixing work.
4. Copyright on this music was expired on 2017
5. I am afraid that my demo would disappear because of violation of "community rules" or some other unknown shit. It is generally disallowed to copy music, right? Users are forced to compose new music, because of.. what? The brain of human is constructed so that it reuses something already heard to construct new music. I am not a composer, I am unable to modify melody to new one, because it will disagree with my own principles of morality. What I can do very well is grabbing music from audio using my ears.

I am in doubt, want to ask you. Is this behavior acceptable? Will such prod stay?

depends on the party, some are more strict then others over the material being 100% original.

overall i would say having a demo with non original music whose original copyright has already expired is perfectly fine. there are multiple examples of demos who used that in the past (both expired and non expired copyright) and was mostly accepted in the demoscene.

ofcourse there will always be some people who will judge you negatively for using known music instead of original work, but that comes with everything anyone does in life.

but i would say most copyright concerns in the demoscene tend to be avoiding DMCA takedown requests on copyright infringements and that folks largely accept homages/references to other copyrighted work to be released in the demoscene.

What ps said.

With the addition that, I would both prefer and respect clear credits towards the original author _inside_ the production.

I second Puryx. Everything else might feel like trying to hide something since not everyone is familiar with everything. Playing with open cards is always a good way when it comes to something like that.

And don't worry, the prod would not disappear. However - as psenough pointed out - having it released at a party might depend on the particular compo rules/what the orgas say. But you won't have to think about that if you release it out of any party. But first the demo has to be finished anyway :)
I propose that you go and arrange the second symphony in its entirety. And vespers for the hidden part.
