generative experimental music using yamaha fm chips
category: music [glöplog]
are there demos there around with experimental generative music using yamaha fm chips, like ym2413, ym2203, etc.? i’m quite curious about!
Well there's mostly intros using those chips, not sure where you draw the line and classify it as generative. Those chips are like synthesizers and for FM standards a tad limited. Do people use frequency modulation in their synthesis? Sure.
generative music is music that is ever-different and changing, and that is created by a system, not generated waveforms.
*mumbles f'in snob* :)
yes, it's very art installation, mixed media, 2018
when toying with the ym2612 i got some annoying "ever-different" behaviour.
When i activated the LFO (~4Hz) it was quite noticeable that every time i triggered a note it would sound different.
I assume this is because for such long sine periods the phase part also becomes relevant.
But there is no way to predict the phase of the LFO as far as i know.

or it might have been the EvenlopeGenerator not reacting to note triggers. i forgot
I toyed a bit with this tool https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=68620
the_Ye-Ti: You should be able to restart the YM2612 LFO and get a consistent phase by turning it off and on again.
Tangentially, I talked with a Finnish musician once who had made some generative music for Yamaha FM chips. His approach was not real-time, though. Instead he used GNU awk to generate .vgm register logs IIRC.
Some example of his music: https://soundcloud.com/d0x10/opl_12_06_1.

check out the band SEGA DEATH, they were quite... aleatoric... the process involved randomly ripping and inserting cartridges mid-memory-fetch
