A minor annoyance is majorly affecting demos
category: general [glöplog]
The one thing I regret is that this wasn't brought up before the party ... because I sure as hell would've loved to put screens and screens of scene drama in my little Teasetro XD

This!
Even I can do it and I can't even draw a filled vector.
not even to save your life?
Ah yes epic controversial threads...
We for one had a chat about this a few months ago: one of us had a 1084, two other a normal modern TV -- after discussing for a bit, the chance of filling THE WHOLE REVISION SCREEN trumped most of other considerations.
I see some asking about the fairness of OCS vs AGA in the same compo, and best the summary of my thinking is like this: it takes a Nexus 7 to beat a Hardwired :)

It's not that hard anyway, good startup-code, properly acknowledging interrupts and making sure no to rely on any hardware registers content is usually all that's needed. Even OCS only stuff can be done of course if you take a bit of care (either by disabling instruction cache and/or simply having two different routines depending on the detected CPU).
Yes, it IS a more work to do all this but IMHO it sure is worth it.

This needs to be put in ye olde Book of Demoscene Proverbs ... if there ever will be one.
To make aga demos that runs on ocs on the other hand. That could be a new compo (most boring compo suggestion ever)

Yeah but that's not even the argument - the cropping was optional, wasn't it...?
Only for your own entry. :-)
Blueberry: Showing all entries alike == "without influence". Showing entries in two modes splits it into "choose any 1 of 2 for the whole demo" != "without influence". But you talk about the bigscreen, I talk about the demo. I guess the shortest summary of the topic is that the bigscreen has affected demos. Including OCS demos, of course, but not so many yet.
I actually like Revision's transparency attitude, the Revision crew didn't let me down during the party and you don't let me down now. My "if zooming is to improve picture quality, ..." should be read as such, fine. As a side note framerate 50/25 vs 60/30 will always be an issue on upscalers from PAL to VGA, I don't think there will ever be a proper solution. I noticed wrong phase deinterlace on Capsule, but that seems to have been the demo not setting phase, if that's the case you can re-run it unless it must be shown as run on the hardware.
Know what the fuck you're doing - I'd largely agree with that. But the rant section is the opposite of true :) others might have already addressed it but I won't - it's mostly all the prejudices rolled into one handy reference :) and unrelated to this.
By OCS scene I mean sceners that are about OCS, AGA, and Amiga in general but almost always are excited about OCS and have tons of comments outside Pouet but only a handful comments on Pouet. I'm sure C64 and other platforms recognize this too.
Anyway, I didn't come here to respond really. I think everything has been said.
I returned to the thread for only this: to get personal opinion out of the way. For me it's a thrill to run great demos on my Amigas and if OCS goes AGA-esque 16:9 then that will happen. I personally don't think letterboxing for bigscreen looks as thrilling on any screen an Amiga user can connect an Amiga to, but obviously the thrill is up to a lot more than screen size, technical achievement and things of this sort, just as for most of us I think. Point is my personal enjoyment is certainly unrelated to the topic in title summarized in my previous comment.
Everyone makes the demo they want to make, and if you don't like the compo rules you can fuck off to some other party. But these are truisms, so they would be silly topics of discussion. I'm not silly.

I shouldn't reply at all, but I'm bored at work. Here we go. :)
Quote:If it's for the audience and competitors accept it, it could be offered for all PAL platforms, but wasn't.
There is no other platform which A., gets recorded, and B., with a significant percentage of the entries were already within (or close to) these defined 16:9 limits anyway (most letterboxed 060/AGA stuff). Theoretically we could offer it to any platform, there just wasn't the need to improve the compo experience this way for anything else. I could have done this anyway (as some parties already did, without asking), but I decided to lay down some clear rules, so everyone knew the terms and conditions beforehand. Also, the Amiga sustains its own competitions, so it was very easy to define clear screen-boundaries, without involving a billion potential problems with various platforms, like in Oldschool. For example see some C64 modes, where a certain part of the screen must be empty - or else, etc.
Quote:If it's to improve the picture quality, a modern capture card or VGA upscaler as used by console gamers could be used if not used already.
We use Folsom ImagePro-IIs for scaling and HDMI encoding, then we do the recording using Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle SSD recorders. The majority of the chain is professional-grade video equipment, definitely not used by your average YouTube gamer. We also have a stack of other converters, two older Sony DSC-1024G, and an OSSC, among others.

Also, I know I'm naive, but I still tend to think, there's only one scene, the Amiga scene, there's no "OCS scene". Most *GOOD* 68k coders I know on the Amiga, can write code which works on any machine just fine (unless it really uses 1-2 of those "ECS only" features, but that's extremely rare), and did both OCS and AGA/060 prods during their scene-career. Then there is a small minority of elitist, who break shit on newer machines, because they think their 68000 only code is so cool, so they can replace half the OS to spare some Blitter waits, and use a trackloader which breaks on half the machines without a Gotek drive these days, because OCS only is 1337... Plus the additional mandatory whining everywhere that other Amiga than their A500 actually exist. Color me unimpressed. (And then we end up with a wild Stingray having to fix their code in 2 days, so there will be a WHDLoad version which - surprise - works everywhere.)
</rant>
Additionally, if someone doesn't like to compete with demos using the 16:9 option, there's plenty of parties to enter your prod. Interestingly, there wasn't a single complaint from people *actually* entering the compo.
TL;DR: we still know what the fuck we're doing. And we're going to do keep the 16:9 option for next year again. Deal with it.

Shakespeare wrote a play about this.
