Desperately seeking a Vectrex for TRSAC

category: general [glöplog]
psonice, you're describing a Vectrex!

Ha, i am! But it wasn't like that picture, i'm sure it had a little bit sticking out from under the screen with a little joystick and a button or two. So all one unit, no controller on a wire. More like a really tiny arcade cabinet.

You can sort of attach the controller to the screen... :-)
You're definitely talking about the Vectrex, the built-in game, Minestorm, is btw the best Asteroids clone you're ever going to play.

Also games come with a front plate with fixed graphics to attach to it, so it may have looked like it could do only 1 game because of that
It wasn't me, but with the right kind of mind, this thread read as "Desperately seeking wetsex for TRSAC".

@TropicalTrevor: also, there IS a built-in game, besides the cartridges.
psonice: you're not thinking of this kind of thing, are you...? Basically a glorified Game-and-Watch, but with a backlit(?) screen that created a surprisingly good illusion of being a "proper" display.

(also, "vector god" just makes me think of this: HAIL VECTRON!)

Gasman: Vectron is a POS terminal manufacturer (at least here in .de). I can't for the life of me buy some bread at my bakery without that skit playing in my mind. :)

Aaah. I think I've played on *both* a vectrex and that grandstand thing! I've definitely played the grandstand one anyway, but I remember a taller thing with vector gfx too.

Shit, that must be nearly 30 years ago!

Plugged it in. Completely dead. Opened it up. Checked the fuse and all caps. Everything looked fine. Invited the magic hands of Highpuff and here we are.

Some barely visible ghosting lines, but otherwise in good condition.

@gasman: this seems to be some kind of VFD display (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_fluorescent_display). I don't know if that counts as "backlit".
I've had an emergency and very sadly can't come to TRSAC.

@ wasp: unless you have a flash cart and I can mail a binary, I guess this isn't happening ;(
