How big can be 3D map?
category: code [glöplog]
So, this is more less your question: "How many poems can you fit on a business card."
And your explanation: "I want to distribute some poems. Nowadays the books are big heavy and I want something smaller."
Now, try to answer the question, see why you can't answer it and draw some conclusions :-)

@vv8:
"PaperBack is a free application that allows you to back up your precious files on the ordinary paper in the form of the oversized bitmaps. If you have a good laser printer with the 600 dpi resolution, you can save up to 500,000 bytes of uncompressed data on the single A4/Letter sheet. Integrated packer allows for much better data density - up to 3,000,000+ (three megabytes) of C code per page."

A4=3mb text... You can fit 12 business cards on A4 so circa 256kb of text on one business card so 500 pages of text in 1mb so 256 will be 125 pages of poems on one business card.
Thats whole your poem book...
Now back to the map talk...

If you really want to miss the point, you can dump all the poems ever made onto a 128gb SD card, fold a business card up and put that inside.
Psonice, what about an NFC business card?
Simply buy 128GB USB business card and put there all poems ever writen...
See? What if your 64MB map is actually just an installer that downloads the actual map?
Actual serious answer: How many artists do you have, how much time, and how detailed do you want it?
If you're not procedurally generating stuff, the map has to be made. That takes time. More time: bigger map. But there's detail too - if cubes are OK for buildings you can make a city fast, but if you want finely crafted, heavily decorated gothic buildings covered in unique statues you'll need a month per building.
So it doesn't depend on memory or anything else, it depends on how rich or empty the world is, and how long you spend filling it.

résumé:
A non-procedurally map can be as big as memory allows considering level of detail and manpower used * time invested.
That´s all about it! But thanks for entertaining us for some time with this thread, good job! :)
For the type of project you´re aiming for i´d never go that route! Procedural is what you want, no need to have 50 people working on models/textures/materials/filling the world and will be done in a few months instead of in 5-10 years!

Something like that is written in every thread you started, but no one ever seen any results. Don't hide them, please!
