Questions about the Pouet.net database

category: general [glöplog]

I've been on this site for the last several years and have built quite a collection of demo downloads whose group and prod names I've named after the database entries here - sometimes, several times, in fact.

I have been wondering if a group name is ever updated once submitted to the database, and I don't think I've seen any examples of that. For example, I've seen groups referred here that have full names, and yet in the scene they are known by their shortened 2-to-4 character aliases, like ATZ for Alcatraz or TBL for The Black Lotus, and yet some groups don't refer to those aliases - why not?

Secondly, do prod names on the database ever change because of mistakes made during the initial entry? Or is it a case of "once submitted, it's concrete"?

I'm sure, seeing as this is the main demoscene resource website, that others have collected data on their favourite prods, even if it's just links, so it would be a nuisance if any of it were updated and they didn't even know what changes were made, so if there ARE changes, is there a list of changes somewhere that can be searched?

Gloperators can edit prods, if that's what you mean, and since 2.0 there's been a rough edit log as well.

Where is that edit log?

Also, what's the situation with adding new group names? I submitted my first demo a long time ago, made by an individual (see "The Vangelis Demo") and only the prod name by itself ended up on Pouet.net - why was that?

also a group entry in the db usually includes the shortened tag of it, so if you look for tbl you will find the black lotus.
sometimes the shortened groupnames are displayed on pouet, but i think that only happens for layout purposes if the title/groups exceeds a certain amount of chars.

Well, I use the shortened names (if any) to save space, but I don't know why the shortened names are not displayed on each prod's unique page - I find I have to click on the group name to see its prods page and only then see the shortened version.

Because noone else does.

I'm sure some other people do, otherwise they wouldn't be shown at all.

That's why they're not.

I use the shorthand simply because some groups have ridiculously long names for URL files, and one of my URL files is:

Quote:

AMMB mrs. pavlov here tells me that she is a polytoxicowomane

which is only viable because the group name:

Quote:

A moiré misszió bemutatja

is long enough as it is.

One group I recall that also had a ridiculously long name was:

Quote:

The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation

And the shorthand, TSCC, is much more manageable.

Even ASD is preferable to Andromeda Software Development.

My point is, some group names are simply too long, even though I know that shorthand also causes problems, as people forget what they stand for and have to look them up. It's just personal preference, that's all.
